I have a good selection of karaoke tracks that I can play along with, but am looking for pure background tracks that I could use for instrumental versions of the songs. I have BIAB, but wondered what everyone else used. Thanks.

Pete, BIAB is my practice tool, as I can load a rhythm track right off of my charts and have it the way I intend to play it, rather than what someone elses arrangement may be. A good source for recorded tracks is Billy Phelps at www.fullcirclesound.com
He has a lot of different styles available.

(When are you going to make it to one of the GaSGA jams? We'll have our next one in November!)

HI Pete,

I made a few backing tracks for some of Ray Price's classic songs. It's all real instruments and they are exact replicas of the original recordings. If you follow this link you can download "A Way To Survive" for free:

I'd like to get BIAB or something like that, but with my finances, I have the poorman's version....me. I just use my acoustic guitar with a metronome and I record our band's arrangements on cassette. Then I burn it onto CD with Audacity. I can also sing a bit so it helps.

If you are willing to pay for it I found that http://www.karaoke-version.com has some nice tracks.I found this site when I was looking for a backing track to Wichita Lineman. What was so cool about it is that it allows you to mix the backing track the way you like it. So you can remove vocals and lead instruments, turn up the bass, change key, change tempo etc. Then you download the .mp3 that you created. Once you pay for the song you can come back and remix it any way that you want again and again. Here is a link to Wichita Lineman.

Thanks Roger, a shame he doesn't have any samples, but a good resource none the less. If the next jam is November, then I'll try to be there. I just started playing 9 weeks ago, and having more musical fun than I have had in years! Buck Eason tells me I missed you at Powersville last Saturday!

Thanks for the replies. The custom backing tracks is a nice resource, and for $2.99 not a bad deal for having one mixed the way you want it.

OK, so I created my own track for this song in BIAB and played along, recording it with my little ZOOM H2n recorder (Live, not mixed). If I were doing something a little more formal, I would likely use one of the sources mentioned to get a better background track. Take a listen if you like:

Pete, Over the years I have collected most of John Hughy's CDs and tracks CDs as well as Hal Rugg, Mike Headrick, and others as I found certain songs that I wanted. If you are interested in Gospel, there are two or three good sites where you can purchase very good tracks for a particular Gospel song. These usualy have a demonstration cut and back up tracks in two or three keys with and without background vocals. A lot of vocalist that sing in Church use these, but I've found they work very well for steel instrumentals too.

There is a seller on EBAY who has CD's of backing tracks that cost next to nothing. The sound on the tracks that I purchased was good. I was pleasantly surprised with these tracks, given the price. The seller is Mike with some numbers after the name. You can find his stuff by putting "Pedal Steel Guitar" into am EBAY search. I don't know if he is on the forum.
