Topic: Quaking/Dan Dugmore on "Better Than I Used To Be" |

Not sure if anyone has heard McGraw's song "Better than I use to be," but Dugmore has a MIGHTY solo! At 2:15 he comes doing the cool quaking thing. I'm still a new player, so if anyone can give me some great insight on creating that effect, I would appreciate it! Thanks!

I believe Dan still uses a Sho~Bud, but he might be playing something else on that album

I always thought quaking was what Chalker used to do by hitting a chord and very quickly pulling back the volume and just as quickly push the volume back on. I didn't hear anything more that Dan playing some pickup licks to lead him into his solo. But I don't have time to keep listening and analyzing it.

Would be nice to know if he would tell us what he did use. If it's a Sho-Bud, that is really inspiring.

I saw him on TV a few years ago and he was still using his Sho~Bud.

Not really.
But appreciate the jibjab.
If music can only be made on modern instruments then that is a stigma and needs to be challenged.
I would expect that an old Stradivari would be out on the trash heap if not in the right hands, or that Leslie West didn't say much with his low-end student model Gibson Les Paul Jr which, fast forward to today, even with Leslie's new fangled trendy guitars, he still said more on Climbing with that entry level Gibson than some may think.
In Billy Joe's (Green Day) hands, a Les Paul Jr. is making him music and coin inspiring a whole new generation using a 60 year old invention.
I don't think Vince Gill feels that way about his '53 Tele.
And Paul Franklin's triage with a Sho Bud in Faro still produced some weeping tones worth listening to.
A Hammond B3 or similar console is on almost all country recordings. So did record producers miss the 50's?
"Miss the '60's" may not be the right choice of words.
Perhaps APPRECIATING the 60's is more apropos.

Hahaha..the internet. not always clear as to intent. I did say "inspirational" not "surprised."
My first steel is a Sho-Bud and mind you I'm by no means an expert on steel's. I'm in my infancy and here to learn. But I did listen to a lot of psg's before deciding on a steel for recording and pestered a few luminaries whose sound inspired me. Hence I did search out as many recordings of a Sho-Bud to make my decision. It was the name I was more familiar with from the 60's. This was the only way I could find info for my needs.
Below is an old photo of the guitar for which I'm graced with stewardship. It now has 5 levers with one up KL instead of just the two, same 3 pedals, installed by Jim Palenscar with Mike Yahl parts. I left it to Jim to figure out what's-what for me.
I wanted future flexibility which I would not have been able to express otherwise, being steel-illiterate.

you've got to love the bud at some time. yours is beautiful...

Lovely family heirloom photo!
I see that we are birds of a feather on the Sho-Bud like.
I have been interested in steel for a long while, was only brave enough to go with a single. Venturing into C6 was something I did not see myself doing. More of a Rusty Young approach. Will I graduate to something more profound? I need to do the Sho-Bud justice before I can answer that. It will be a studio instrument.
