Wow! Double wow. As good as anything they have put out. Fabulous harmonies and Brian Wilson musical arrangements. Classic Beachboys sound. It entered Billboard at #4 in sales in the first week. I can just picture Brian Wilson with a big smile on his face at the board on final mix down. It's just a pleasure to listen to. Check it out. |

I went and bought it today for fathers day and agree that it is really good. Brian is amazing for the fact that he can still write a great song.
The album is worth buying for the title track, 'That's why god made the radio', but the best song is track ten, 'From there to back again', man it really shows Brian's genius and the fact that he truly is a great American treasure.
Looking forward to seeing them in the end of June!
Happy Father's Day everyone! _________________ Regards, Craig

agreed.
really enjoying the new album. saw the Boys in Atlanta and will never forget it. so good to see these guys all together again, and man they can still hit those harmonies. Al and Bruce's voices have barely aged at all. And David is quite a tasty guitarist.
today was Brian's 70th birthday and what a year it's been!
Beach Boys at Bonnaroo!

Enjoy this fan video of the song I mentioned on an earlier post, 'From There to Back Again'. An instant classic in my opinion.
Also check out their performance and interview at Rolling Stone.com., My buddy Bill Crandall interviewed them and they have 3 songs on the site that they played in the studio.

I'm a huge Beach Boys fan, and I'm glad they've got a new record out. I was a huge fan of their songs as a kid and I still listen to those songs now and they still sound awesome, like they did when they first came out! Would love to hear their new songs! "Surfer Girl" would be a great instrumental for the steel guitar! |

I've been kind of on the fence about this reunion thing, and I am a giant Beach Boys fan/Wilsonophile. A few years ago my son and I were blown away by the Brian Wilson Band and the final ever performance of Pet Sounds from start-to-finish at The Paramount Theater in Oakland.
In reference to the quote above - I am going to pick up a copy - but as good as anything they have put out? I'll have to hear it for myself of course, but that is one TALL order. _________________ Mark |

Thanks for the heads up Kevin. My copy arrived yesterday and I'm on listen number 5. Destined to be one of my favorites. Smooth harmonies, great melodies and the classic Beach Boys sound. However, I think what really makes it are the lyrics. Definitely not an attempt to simply copy the songs of their earlier days but more of a bittersweet look back at life.
God bless 'em....
Particulary liked the lyrics to Summer's Gone:
Summer's gone
Summer's gone away
Gone away with yesterday.
Old friends have gone
They've gone their separate ways
Our dreams hold on
For those who still have more to say.
Summer's gone
Gone like yesterday
The nights grow cold
It's time to go
I'm thinking maybe I'll just stay
Another summer gone
Summer's gone
It's finally sinking in
One day begins, another ends
I live them all and back again
Summer's gone
I'm gonna sit and watch the waves
We laugh, we cry
We live then die
And dream about our yesterday. |

This is why I said it's as good as anything they ever put out. It's Brian's swan song. I got sad when I heard it. I wished they would have included a guitar rocker in there. He's saying goodbye to us. The production on this album is superb. |

I've been listening to it every day for about 3 weeks now. I bought it for 5 bucks at their Houston concert (which was 3 hours long and contained 47 full songs.) My favorite song on the new album is a tossup between the title cut and "Pacific Coast Highway". PCH has Brian singing about realizing that his "days are getting on" then taking a sunset drive down Highway One. |

Kevin,
I read somewhere that they are thinking of doing another album, but that will be determined later.
I will ask a friend of mine who has contacts with them if there is any truth to that.
I didn't go to the show her in NJ, I was real busy and tired from the heat, plus the price for decent seats was too much, got great reviews and sounds like it was sold out. Have all 3 of my kids birthdays coming up in the next ten days so, have to take care of them first $$$. _________________ Regards, Craig

great interview with Joe Thomas about the making of the album HERE.
Quote: |
Which songs were in that first batch of four?
You’d never guess. It’s kind of funny. “That’s Why God Made the Radio,” of course. “Summer’s Gone,” which was one verse, and basically what Brian always wanted to do was make that the last song on the last Beach Boys record. He changed his mind since then. He wanted the original title of the album to be Summer’s Gone. But he had so much fun with Mike and the guys that he scratched that about halfway through the recording process and insisted on changing the title to That’s Why God Made the Radio, because he really didn’t in a lot of ways want this to be the last Beach Boys record. Or he didn’t want that stigma that it had to be. So that was a big step. |

Craig, what could possibly be a better birthday present for your 3 kids than to take them to a Beach Boys concert? Just think of the lifelong memories it will create!
p.s. And, for her next birthday, I'll bet your wife would love a brand new D10 with 8+7. _________________ www.JimCohen.com

After listening to the new album multiple times, I offer my humble opinion. Although it is good to hear a new "Beach Boys" project, how can it be the Beach Boys without Carl and Dennis? The falsetto parts in particular are generic, and lack that "nasal" Wilson quality. ....just my observations. |

I don't know, Larry, it might be too much to ask to find present day 60-somethings with nasal falsettos that sound like 20-somethings. Think it's best summed up by the Desert Rose Band: "you can go home but you can't go back". Think Brian and the guys came pretty darn close on this though
Have any forumites worked up That's Why God Made The Radio on pedal steel yet? Can't get that melody out of my head. I spent last nite working on the chord progression on a keyboard...lots of really lush maj7, min7, and dom7 chords. I'm thinking it might make a nice C6 instrumental...may be in over my head when I figure out how it lays out. You guys will be the first to know when I need a hand with it! |

Thanks, Scott. I came pretty close to your take on the chords but missed that G7sus4 in the intro. You nailed it - very cool chord...
So many of the Beach Boys harmonies outline notes in a particular chord construction, I'm thinking some sort of chord/melody steel instrumental might sound really full. The walkdown on several of the maj to maj7 to dom7 changes would be nice as well. |
