hi guys,
I just joined. want to say howdy. I have been on a path that has led me here. I have played guitar for decades. have recently branched out a bit and now am interested in getting a lap steel. maybe a console. maybe both.
I am looking for advice about a couple instruments that I am gonna go check out tomorrow.

I am looking for thoughts about all the steels here.
there are 6. 
any thoughts about these will be greatly appreciated.
(I am messing around on a dobro and a national delphi right now. I am thinking that a lap or console steel might be an excellent addition to play.) |

Hi Charles
Go look and play all the steels and see what you like. As to price for a better price you might get one from someone on the form. Also go to Gruhn and Elderly on the web and sometimes guitar center vintage will have a good deal.

Yeah....this one intrigues me....the 1959 National/Tonemaster Console 6 steel for $499. The big IF about this is the Valco pup. If that pup is a full pup with no cardboard...and if it screams......that could be a keeper.....depending on what type of music you want to play.
Killer for rock and blues.
That seems to be the best price out of the lot....because of the legs. |

Hi
The tonemaster because of the legs but I think it's a $100. to high. But with me a guitar has to feel right and they all sound different. Go to Doug Beaumier video's on youtube and you can hear about a dozen or so different steel guitars played very well so you can see what sound you like.
My first was a teisco six string that sounds like a fender somewhat. Then I got a Ohau Diana Tonemaster that has a super strong pickup a Rick panda and a Gibson BR9. Then I got a Fender T8 strigmaster which I love.
If you learn to play I think you will want a double or triple neck eight string so you will have two or three tunnings without changing guitars.

That one caught my eye too. While not necessary rare, you don't see a lot of those long scale Tonemasters out in the wild.

next up. any comments on an 8 string jerry byrd fry pan? its one from the 70's.
thinking of giving it a shot.

Great hope you enjoy the guitar. Could you post some better photos of the guitar, top, bottom and with legs. Maybe someday soon a sound sample.
As to the frypan if its in good shape an a good price get it. If you'er like a lot of us you'll have a half dozen before you know it.

Cool ... I'll bet you have a lot of fun with it!
I'm not much help with the Excel, but it has been discussed in detail, so maybe a form search will yield some fruit.

| Be aware on the JB frypan that the knobs might get in your way? They don't bother some folks at all but I wanted one of these and didn't pursue it because of the knob placement. Good luck! |

I have read a teensy bit about these. I saw that someone removed the knobs and capped where they were.
I bought my first lap steel yesterday (with legs).
will welcome any more comments about the excel.
