I'm building a couple of double neck consoles using pedal steel end plates. One double 8, and one double 10. What is the usual thickness of the wood used for the top and aprons?
I've got some Hard Maple, but will be using figured Soft Maple on at least one of them. They will have wooden necks.
Thanks. |

The venerable and slightly overbuilt MSA Classic used 1 inch thick hard maple for the deck, and 1 inch thick for the neck. The front apron looks like quarter inch _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

Better check with what ever brand the end plates fit.
Steel Guitars do not have standard measurements on lots of things - just a hint to save you some wood, time and heart problems.

Thanks, Guys.
This is kind of what I expected. I've got some 5 and 6/4 hard Maple, and a few pieces of figured soft maple that could finish out to 1". I've got a lot of curly soft Maple that is already sanded down to 3/4" or a little thicker.
Since I'm not installing a changer, or putting any more pressure than finger pulls behind the bar, I'm not concerned so much about cabinet drop. I just don't want to see it bow up under string pressure.
As for the end plates, I can glue up some hard maple shims under the ends if I decide to try some of the 3/4" figured wood, and need it to be thicker. |
