Why yes he is...

And both these links were posted in this thread : http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=228725

But again, yes he is quite good at what he does.

On "Fiddle Sticks Boogie" I hear Chris playing a Ride very close to Joaquin Murphy's ride on the Spade Cooley record of "Oklahoma Stomp" over 60 years ago. This has been copied many times by many Steel Players.

To 'take a ride' is to play a solo.

Here is what he has said he uses for his tuning, which Im guessing is really close to kayton roberts. Could have changed by now though, I know he is a guru on different tunings.

"I tune the inside to C6/a7:

E
C
A
G
E
C#
A
A (bass note)

Sometimes I drop the fourth string from G down to F#, and play it as a D9 tuning.

I tune the outside to E13:

E
C#
G#
E
F#
D
B
E

Sometimes I drop the second string from C# down to B and use it as an E9 tuning"

So were the 4th and 5th strings inadvertently switched around in his post?

Thanks!

yeah, something is off on that E13.

the low A in the C6 tuning is mainly for special effects, like pig grunts (seriously), and other uses. its not meant to be used in a pure chord function...although you could.

it looks like Chris uses the old Shubb bar - so he may be the new role model for the bullet vs shubb bar debate. it must be modified, i tried one once and it got hung up all in the strings, some grind off one end to make it glide better.
i havent watched/listened to him enough to see if he slants, but it looks like for his style, with lots of bar effects, that Shubb may be the ticket.

Here is Kayton's version. Great tune. Love the way he pulls the string behind the bar.

That interview was done in 2010 I believe, and I think the two videos at the start of this thread are later. At the Canadian Steel show a couple of weeks ago Kayton Roberts was the headliner. I got to see him play both nights, he is an incredible player and a very nice man with an excellent sense of humour.
I think that he may have had some influence on Chris Scruggs'style.
