When it comes to sticking power:

How long have you been playing steel guitar?

How long have many of you been married?

How many times have you been married?

Have you ever had a heart attack?

How long have you owned/played your favorite steel?

How many of you have been non-drinkers?

How many of you have been non=smokers?

Ray, I started playing near the end of a generation that believed culturally that (professional) musicians were pretty much lowlifes. (While at the same time believing that a musical instrument was part of a well-rounded education!) I have to admit that I've met some really slackers and devious jerk-offs... some of whom are now the most famous people I know.
But also that the musicians in the bands and businesses I deal with these days are some of the most kind, thoughtful, moral, talented , intelligent, and family-oriented folks I know.
People are people!

I got the idea for this post from reading thro' the varied posts over in the 'our extended family'section. What an education one can get by reading thro' that section each day.

Lot's of our SGF Members have been married for a mighty long time (deserving a BIG CONGRATULATIONS),
others have endured serious health issues (heart attacks, lung transplants, etc., etc.), while still others have endured the loss of a loved one, even a loyal pet.

I was merely curious if playing steel guitar for a long time played any role in these health issues and/or other life happenings.

Mark, I tend to agree with you.

During more recent years, I too have noted a considerable improvement in the lives of our friends and fellow musicians. THAT is all good! Learning to play steel guitar with a serious dedication tends to build good character as I see it. No longer are they the run of the mill dead beat type personalities that used to prevail so abundantly.

Post  Posted 24 Jun 2012 9:09 pm     Does playing steel guitar build character?

Why, yes it does. I used to engage in all those self-destructive financial habits--divorce, guitar-swapping, drinking, smoking. But after years of continually playing the steel guitar, the bell finally rang and the light went on. I discovered all the good jazz chords on C6th! Life changed as I now pursue a goal with no limits. That's right, I can sit and learn new things every day and never be bored, which means, that I no longer look for shallow stimulation in other areas of my life.

I've hooked up with a recording artist (Tom Bovine) that is all biz, no smoking or drinking when out on tour (but Tom says its OK to chew and spit like a real cowboy)

I noticed that one important question was left off of the list, that being how a musician conducts business; meaning, if you book the gig, (other than taking your expenses to book it) do you cheat the other players on the money end. I have been cheated by other musicians on many occasions; some have gone so far as to steal other musician's awards/trophies and keep them. Isn't honesty a big part of character?

I think musicians have always had a bad rep. Drinking, drugs, womanizing, destruction of property, etc. My dad told me that way back in the thirties when they used to play music around the oil fields in Wyoming, the band would go out back of the dance hall and drink booze and smoke pot with the Mexican workers. I have known many many pickers over the years with drug/alcohol problems and married over and over, couldn't hold a regular job and owned nothing but their equipment and that was in hock half the time. I believe it is way out of sync with other careers, but I can't prove it. I remember one time when a friend of mine who was a steel picker was talking to Jean Shepperd off stage. He asked her how they made the decision on who to use for her recordings. She replied that they picked "whoever could play and was sober that day".

Ray: What other members of the Human Race are you comparing Musicians character to ?? I like that, Billy. I've often heard preachers say that you have two types of people in the world ... Jews & Gentiles; but, I like to say there's three kinds of people ... Jews, Gentiles and Musicians. Laughing

How long have you been playing steel guitar?
36 Years.

How long have many of you been married?
My wedding day was one of the happiest days of my life ... afterward, it was always the wife saying "You need to quit that damned steel guitar and get a real job!" ... my next happiest day was 17 years later when I finally said "yes" to a divorce.

How many times have you been married?
Only once and that was way more than enough for me ... I guess it's a pretty bad marriage when you watch The Wizard of Oz and the wicked witch of the west starts looking better than your wife. Shocked

Have you ever had a heart attack?
No, have been very fortunate with good cardiovascular health so far.

How long have you owned/played your favorite steel?
Out of the 10 steels I've owned, I've had three real all-time favorites: a 1976 Emmons, a 1986 Mullen and a 1990 Mullen. Played the 1976 Emmons for 9 years (unfortunately no longer have that guitar). Played the 1986 Mullen for 17 years (still have that guitar and currently play it). Played the 1990 Mullen for 5 years (no longer have it, either ... sold it to acquire the 1986 Mullen).

How many of you have been non-drinkers?
Have been known to drink a bit in my day, but not too much. Cool

How many of you have been non-smokers?
I fall into the smoker category, but unlike the old days when I smoked a pack a day, a pack now usually lasts me for three or four days ... have slowed down quite a bit over the years.

Musicians are the best people in the world. If somebody doesn't realize that fact... they are an idiot.

Musicians should watch out for idiots like this because they probably think politicians are really cool, honest and caring people. Oh Well
