| I probably know more about electronics than most. A couple of years in electronics in High School(FFA) and 2 qtrs in college physics then a community class in TV repair(mostly to repair a silvertone tube amp head and a super reverb). I recently broke out some old PA amps with the goal of putting together a simple tube amp. I found my old RCA tube manual and I ordered a couple of current editions of tube how toos. One says you need a mentor or some group to hang out with that work on tube amps. I have a friend that builds and repairs near me but I think he would rather have me pay him to do it for me. I did pick something up from the A/C guys the other day. So I immediately ordered a capacitance meter. I started checking my guitar cords and that brought up some new stuff. I guess this is a start of a documentary but if I get some response I'll just post stuff as I come to it. My first amp is like a Tweed Delux with 2 6v6 and 2 12ax7. |

One tip - Make sure your "mentor" has the same mind-set and instrument playing preferences that you do. The vast majority of guitar amp specialists and techs know zippo about what a pedal steel is and what it should sound like. In other words, you don't learn how to work on your Corvette by watching a Mercedes mechanic, or vice-versa.  |

Good point Donnie.
One of my books was written by the guys that build the Kendrick amps and the have a lot of mods, work arounds and substitutions but I think they mostly want to go for distortion. I'm mostly focusing on power supplies first. I've got to get some new caps. |
