I have a Peavey Bandit 65 that sounds pretty good with the Scorpian 12", but I want to try a Black Widow, 12-8. Which one of the many 12's should I get?

According to Mike Brown (Peavey) the Black Widow 1203-4 is the speaker that was used in the 112E extension cabinets built a while back. They are considered to be a good steel speaker (kinda like the 1501-4 only 12").

They also come in 8 ohm...Peavey Item No: 00560740
They are available from Peavey and several other places such as Direct Pro Audio

Another (more expensive) option, if weight is an issue, would be to get a Replacement Basket and a Neo magnet. Peavey sells these as seperate items. You would need...
1203-8 Replacement Basket (8 ohm) - Peavey Item No: 00560750
Neo Magnet Structure - Peavey Item No: 00560870

The Peavey Item No's can be ordered through any Peavey Dealer, you can call Peavey Parts at 877-732-8391, or you can look around on the web. Example: Parts Express has both the Replacement Basket and Neo Mag.

Charles, Thanks for that. My amp requires an 8 ohm, but you gave me a lot to work with. Really appreciate it.

The Peavey 1203-4 for steel is great and the 1203-8 is great for guitar. I have a Mesa 20/20 using only one side with a 1203-8 and a GP-100 preamp on a Black Face setting with reverb only. Very nice.

With all due respect to everyone posting, the current 1201 and 1203 BW's are not the same speakers as in previous years. The current baskets are Kevlar impregnated cones, whereas the former ones were an untreated paper cone which was deemed to be more desirable for musical instruments as was the later 1501-4 series.

That's not to say that they current ones won't work, only that they're different composition.

IMO, FWIW, the earlier 1201-8, flat mag and super structure [with the alum. cap] and the 1203-4/8 from the 90's issue are the most desirable for instrument use. JMO, so let me have it. Oh Well

Jerry...
You have way more knowledge than I do when it comes to Black Widows. I know this from reading some of your prior posts and have appreciated the information you have shared. I also respect your opinion on these matters.

Your Paper to Kevlar conversion timeframe echo's information from Mike Brown. Peavey felt the Kevlar 1203 was suitable to use in the Nashville 112E Extension Cabinets. That implied to me Peavey considered it to be a "good" musical instrument (steel) speaker.

All BW's were originally paper cone before we changed over back in the mid '90's. The 1203's have always been Kevlar since we changed over in the '90's. We used the Kevlar 1203's in the Nashville 112E speaker cabinets when they were manufactured.
I've been considering one for my NV112. In your opion, should I reconsider?

Jim, I apologize for the thread "drift"...

I always defer to Mike however, in some of the older literature and catalogs listing the Nashville 112E, the cone is described as having a special design paper construction v. Kevlar impreg. specifically voiced for musical instrument applications. I have all that media from the late 80's thru early 00's.

I don't claim to have all the correct info, I'm just going by what I have seen and read in their literature over the years. There may have been some overlapping production as well.

As far as the Kevlar baskets, several of the Nashville steel players, either in recent history or possibly still, used the current Kevlar production 1201 and 1203 with what they described as good results. Jonathan Culifer for one, et al. I think I read somewhere that Paul used some of these at some recent time, however I defer to him on that.

I don't own nor have I done any experimenting with the NV112 but several players have tried BW's in their NV112's. A search on the subject should turn up a bunch of hits.

From my own personal never ending experimentation, I just came to the conclusion that the older issue 1201 and 03 speakers sounded best to me, but you know what they say about opinions. Exclamation Laughing YMMV.

Peavey's website doesn't list any BW speakers for musical instrument use currently. Only for sound reinforcement apps. They don't list the 1501 either, so maybe there are other omissions as well.

The best thing is just to try 'em for yourself. I was merely stating my findings and trying to quote the info as garnered from Peavey's literature over the years.

Thanks, Jerry. I appreciate your input and that's why I asked for "your opinion".

Yes, the remaining BW models are all listed under "Pro Audio Speakers" > "Low Frequency". The 1501-4 is not there, although Mike suggested in January that they were still available, but in short supply and rarely built. They may be gone by now...who knows. The 1501-4 Replacement Basket doesn't show either, but it is available several places on the web.

Thanks again...

I am looking seriously at the Eminence Tonespotter for a 12" single replacement in a 40 watt tube Fender amp to use for PSG and telecaster. 70-5500hz. 75 watts.

The Tonker is a 150 watt version

At 85.00-95 they seem to spec out nice. (NFI)

Kevin,

Thanks for the great service on the speaker!

I got the Eminence Tonker installed in my Fender Hot Rod Deluxe today, and ran every instrument available through it. What a difference! My Industrial Lap Steel was fantastic. All other guitars played had very nice clarity on all strings. Can't wait to put a PSG through it. Missed Fedex twice today with my new Stage One. Monday.
