This is an SX 2 that I recently bought. I finished the fingerboard with shellac and dyed and lacquered the body. Replaced the tuners with 18:1 Grovers. Removed the bridge, the tone and volume controls and plugged up the holes. Made a string through bridge.
The project went fairly smoothly until yesterday when I experienced numerous difficulties, the worst being when the drill got caught and flung the guitar out of control and onto the concrete! Signs of a struggle are everywhere with the result: A reliced guitar

I like the ideas that you have for improving the rondo, but why did you removed the volume and tone controls? Like the string through idea though and it is a shame that the project "hit the bricks". But sometimes beauty is in the sound more than in the looks. Good luck with it. |

I never ever use the tone control on any guitar. I set the tone on the amp and leave it. But I do use a volume pedal. Hence, for me, tone and volume knobs are superfluous and in the way. |

Cool! I have that same model, blond no finish to speak of and the p-90. I also have the sunburst model and a mahogany black with lipstick p/up. I use them all, for sit in coffee house gigs, experiment with tunings, and when I need to travel light but still want to have a steel nearby. I want to do something with the finish of the blond one also. Love my Rondos. The ash body model is the best. |

Good job, Joseph. I considered doing a string thru with an angle bridge on my first Rondo but decided on using an LP JR tail piece instead. The LP JR was a direct replacement so I was able to use the existing holes but I still wonder if there is a tone difference using a string thru.
My Rondo's are both early mohogany models which are cool but I love the look of the ash. The cool thing about the Rondo's is that they're cheap enough to experiment with. I would actually like to shorten the fretboard on one and add a second pickup. _________________ https://markmansueto.bandcamp.com/

I think Ash has a more nasal tone than Mahogany or Alder. I've never had an instrument with a P90 before this because to me they have a rough and buzzing tone. Hence, with the combination of Ash and the P90 this guitar sounds like a Siamese cat!
The tuners are a joy to use. The stock tuners, while quite serviceable, felt as they were going to explode.
The modified guitar is more responsive to touch than it was. This I attribute to better acoustical coupling of the bridge. Also, there is now greater tonal range depending on where you pick, close to the bridge or further up. |

The pricey bridge is the only stud mount bridge I have found that is flat. The others all appear to be arced. |

I sent an email to Rondo a while back and inquired about the sunburst lap steel with the P-90 pickup in the video and was informed it would be available this summer. For a $109.00 it's looks to be a great project guitar.
