I'm a relative new-comer to pedal steel and have been exploring copedents, just converted to Jimmy Day version and like it better (with custom right knee on the B's). I'd like to play a lot of styles and am considering universal tuning before I get a lot of learning time in. Is there a reason why a beginner should NOT learn on universal? I'm going to order a new lighter-weight guitar anyway (bad back), so I'm thinking I should I get a 12-string to allow universal. Any thoughts are much appreciated, thanks! |

there is no reason in the world not to get a universal.
Correction. the only real limitations in either of the two common universal tunings is that they both predate some of the modern additional changes. So if/when you decide you want the Tommy White raise on strings 1&2 (1&3 on Bb6) or the Franklin Drop, the guitar starts getting seriously loaded (notice I'm at 10&7, Darvin Wilhoite has me beat by two levers).
That said, there lies a heckuva lot of music on 7 or 8 and 5. And I think it a shame that the E9/B6 left off the C6 P4. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)
More amps than guitars, and not many effects |

If the universal tuning would have been around or popular when I started playing pedal steel I would have probably used it.
I say go for it. |

I started off on a borrowed Maverick, but bought an MSA Universal a few weeks later. It worked out great for E9 playing, but I never really got into the B6. I think if I had started on a D-10, I would be a better C or B6 player. _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.
