Topic: What software are you using to make chord charts? |

Hey all,
I was doing a little searching the other day trying find a decent program (preferably free or under $20) to make basic Nashville number charts. I should explain that I'm perfectly fine making charts by hand and scanning them, which is what I've been doing up to now, but I am just curious as to what others are doing in the computer realm. I know there are some more expensive programs that can do the trick, but I'm not willing to invest a lot of cash in this. It seems like it should be pretty simple to do, though. I'm on a Mac, BTW.
I found one app that runs on my iPhone called iReal b. It's actually pretty slick, and for $8, it fits the (cheap) budget. And it can actually play the chart back for you with a simple backing arrangement similar to BIAB.
Here's an example chart I made:
I was also looking at Finale, which I have a demo of, as well as Sibelius G7 (already own) and Impro-Visor (free, open source). All these programs can technically do it, but they are way too complicated in my opinion, and they don't produce a compact, minimal chart with only the necessary information...unless I'm missing something. iReal b seems set up more for charts.
What are you guys using? Anything better out there?

I mostly use OpenOffice (which is free), but it doesn't do all of the fancy musical stuff. I just set the tab stops to 1" and type the chord names, hitting tab after each one. I use the | key for bar lines.

Hey b0b, can you post a screenshot or send me an example chart you've done with OpenOffice?
Andy, that looks good, but I don't own BIAB. Also, it's got too much wasted space for my taste - I'd like to be able to put these charts on my iPhone, prop it up on the keyhead, and still be able to read the numbers. Or, alternatively, print them onto 3x5 cards.
Roger, I looked at Number Chart Pro, but it's more than twice my budget for this idea. And it looks like it's really just a font set? You still have to do all the formatting manually? |

I'm not sure how I had the tabs set, but you get the idea. It's just a word processor file.

Sam, if you're talking about the iRealb chart - there's a slight learning curve, but not too bad. There are videos on their site: irealb.com

I was watching an SG video and the instructor had a spreadsheet program for showing chords and scales all across the neck. Anyone know what that program is?
