I am adding a 4th pedal and need a longer axle - I have 2 questions:
1. What are the Carter Axles made of?
2. Could I use aluminum round stock of the same thickness?
Many thanks!! _________________ LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN GEORGIA

I think aluminum would be too soft and the friction would wear down the rod, but not positive. It's been a while since I had my axle out, but I'm almost sure it is stainless. If it was plain steel, it would have to be plated so it doesn't rust. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . I was just working on my guitar today and noticed the same thing. Might be Delrin. It's pretty tough whatever it is. There is no wear on it where the pedals rotate on it.
And now that I think about it,I remember when I bought a pedal kit from Carter to add a zero pedal, it came with the longer rod that was needed, and it was some kind of plastic. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . Get in touch with Bud Carter. The plastic shaft is one piece. I changed it in a U12 Carter. _________________ Bill |

Are you getting the 4th pedal kit from Al Brisco? See if he includes the longer rod that is needed the way Carter used to. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . I checked no farther than google. Assuming 3/8", zorotools.com will sell you 6' for 4 bucks. Plus shipping.
A few entries down, San Diego Plastics sells black at 87 cents a foot _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

John, I was wondering how long it would take for someone to comment on that.
On the minimum charge from Al Briscoe, that $40 is a little tough. I need a couple of the brass pins for the bellcranks, but $40 is a little steep. But, if you were buying the kit to add a 4th pedal from him, that would be way above the $40 minimum and I think he should add the longer rod as Carter used to do when they sold kits to add extra pedals. If you already have all the parts except the rod., then buying from the sources that were named is your best bet. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . Couldn't help myself! I'm a musician!
Delrin actually seems like a good choice, as it's self-lubricative nature would work well against any wear. I'm trying to restrain myself,,,,,,,,,, |

The thread title is a bit misleading, it's not black plastic rod..it is Delrin...
