Topic: What does this symbol mean in 'This Ole House' printout |

Attached is a pic of a couple of bars of a line printed from BIAB "This Ole House". What does the symbol in the yellow highlight mean please?? It looks like a small "u".

It means that the 2 notes are picked together, not separately.
The length of the picked note (B) would be the quarter note and the 16th note combined.
I hope this is a clear explanation.

Yes, it's known as a "tenuto tie" or just "tie" in musical notation. It's basically a way to change the duration of a note without messing up the way the rest of the measure looks, or to extend a note across a bar line. Or, in this case, to write a note that is one quarter note plus one sixteenth note in length, which there is really no other symbol for.

Hello Howard and Bryan and thank you both. I'm familiar with "ties", but usually they are larger and above the notes. I thought of that, but because of it's small and weird shape and on the bottom, I actually thought it meant something else.
I see in this case there is no room. I feel kind of embarassed about asking the question.

Nah, Bryan. I'm actually legally blind (all my life) and, because the tie is so tiny on the printed sheet I didn't even see it until a lady student asked me what it was!!!!!!!!
