Of the pedal steel companies currently in business, which ones build and sell the most guitars over a year’s time?

It was ShoBud then Emmons then MSA then Carter........I suspect it is now Mullen, but that's just a guess.

Mullen pretty much dominated the Oklahoma Steel Show this week end. I didn't make a count in comparison with the other brands, but there was a bunch of Mullen guitars there. Justice guitars are starting to come on strong as well. Fred is a great guy and builds a great guitar. Larry

I think Tony hit the nail on the and I also think that Mullen is leading the pack now. Back during the Carter era, they was tons of Carter's made I think surpassing any of the makes before. Carter's were great guitars, hardly any waiting period and cheaper than most pro guitars. Just my 2 cents

I would like to have been a fly on the wall and watched the "Mick" poised and ready to strike that submit button. Laughing By what I seen and heard it would be Mullen, would love to try one for myself but my nearest hope for that vanished when we lost Herbie. I was supposed to go down in June and check the G2 out. Sad

I still haven't decided what steel guitar to buy.

I am certain I want a D-10 8 5 with a standard set up. I'd like to get a popular guitar so my family can sell it after I am dead.

It doesn't matter how much it weighs because it will never leave the stdio.

I am leaning toward getting a brand new one.
The mechanical soundness of an instrument is actually the most important consideration.

Price is not as much an issue as much as how well it retains its value. I have other instruments that I bought new that are now worth more than what I paid for them.

In that case, order a Franklin. They're always worth the cost of a new one, meaning they appreciate in value as the cost of new ones escalates.
Mullen or Zum or Fessenden all do pretty well, too.
The downside of the Franklin is that Paul Sr. makes them at his own pace and he may or may not build yours by the time he retires. And they're the price of several different new cars.

Lane
I am always afraid of giving some one a complete open end on a delivery date. I have had real bad experiences with that system.

I haven't heard of Fessenden. Do you know why their retail price is lower than the others?

Not a clue. They're great guitars, though.
Justice guitars are also good, but too soon to see how they hold their value.
Personally, resale value rarely effects my decision, I choose by the best guitar for the application.

Thanks Lane. I am that way also with instruments I know a lot more about.

Get hold of Mickey Adams in Dallas, He can fix you up with new or used, and one that will hold its value. Mickey completely goes thru the used ones, and you for sure can depend on what he tells you.
Not a better dealer anywhere. Larry B.

How quick are you turning 'em out, Doug?

I'd imagine BMI and EMCI could crank 'em out, too. I guess it's a function of both demand and capacity.

I'm selling quite a few Lane....but I don't believe I'm in first place for quantity. Of course I could be mistaken about all of it. It's nice that there is a lot of business. I probably shouldn't have said anything.

As long as every maker sells all they make, and only go idle when they want, this is a good thing. It appears you can sell 'em as fast as you can make 'em.
To which I say "Right On!"

Regardless of who is building the MOST guitars, the thing that is interesting is that there are so many high quality PSG's currently being manufactured.

Mullen, Emmons, GFI, Rains, Zum, Justice, Desert Rose, Fessenden, MSA, Rittenberry, Russler, Jackson, Williams, Show-Pro, BMI...........You can't really go wrong w/ buying any one of them

He's been building since the 70s, I really suspect there's more than that, since for a lot of that time he did about 1 a week.
