Although many of us were born in the United States, there are a lot of people here from other countries, proof that the steel has become international in it's appeal. We have players in China, The Philippines, France, Germany, Israel, South Africa, Japan, Sweden, etc. (Apologies to any players from countries I omitted.)

Please tell us where you're from, and any relevant information about steel guitar activity in your country.

I live close to Mannheim, Friedrich Gretch (guitars) comes from here as does Carl Benz (the automobile inventor).
Concerning steel I can only speak for this region: Dieter Bauer a Forum member who doesn't post anymore, is a steel player who knows a lot about the technical side of the instrument. There's another guy whose name I can't remember at the moment, who played with a well known singer called Tom Astor, and a friend who plays a few gigs a month.
I've not been playing in public for almost a year, but I've been invited to a jam- session with a relative from the Tielman Brothers in a few days.

Born in Norway. Raised in Canada and Norway. Canada has been my home for the last 39 years. Currently on vacation in Norway.
Go here: http://www.visitandalsnes.com/index.php?lang=no for a taste of Norway's splendid nature (click on thumbnails) The train ride from Oslo to this place is breathtaking!

Here, the interest in steel is huge considering the low population (approx 5 mil).I would say there are 100 steel players here(correct me fellow Norwegians)
There is even one BenRom pedal steel in Norway, and one more to come shortly!

Edmonton is a largish city (over a million in the metropolitan area) in Alberta - the Canadian Province that is due north of Montana. That's where I live, though I spend a lot of time on an island on the coast of British Columbia. Lots of fine steel players in this part of Canada. Jeff Bradshaw, who runs the Canadian steel Guitar Show, lives just a couple of hours down the road.

I live in Atlantic Canada, on the easternmost tip of North America. As far as steel players go in my hometown, I'm one of about five or six who play actively. Here's St. John's on a rare sunny day. What you see is a natural harbour with a small narrows to the ocean, just over the hill in the left hand corner of the photo:

And here's what was lingering outside the harbour about a month ago:

In the foreground is Fort Amherst, with centuries-old British fort ruins still standing. This was Britain's first North American colony, settled over 600 years ago. And the Vikings were here long before that.
