In the early 70s, Larry Tryder or Trider (sp.) was a country act that toured Colorado, New Mexico and Texas. I thought some day I would hear him on a major label, but if he ever did I didn't catch it. Does anyone know Larry Trider or if he still performs?
Also, I have an vinyl LP of a singer out of Dallas, TX, Gary Van, from back in the 70s I am guessing, on the Justice Record label out of Texas. Has a good little four piece band on it, steel, lead, bass and drums. I found that old album the other day and been playing the heck out of it since. Anyone out there know if Gary or any of the players on the session are still around Dallas and still playing? |

I saw Larry at the Red Raider Lounge in Lubbock, Texas in the late 70's....I later heard that he was involved in some capacity with Willie Nelson. Wish I had more current info for you. |

When I lived in LBB 71-72 Larry Trider and his band would play the Alamo club south of LBB.. He had a great steel player that played a Fender 400... Gary was his given name and can't remember his last..
Trider's band would rehearse religously every day..they were about as tight as any band I've ever heard.. Long gone are the days of the great Honky Tonk band...
I remember seeing Frank Carter playing with bands in LBB..back then Frank was a super steel player.. _________________ Houston, TX

Larry Trider... did he ever venture up north? I may be off base but I seem to remember seeing him at a club in Lansing Michigan, 1975-76. Shortly after that his bus flipped over. Same guy? |

I know Larry pretty well, used to hang out and party with him and a few iterations of his band back in Lubbock during the mid 70's and 80's. Haven't heard from or about him since I left Lubbock in 88. Last time I saw him was when we went on a 3 day roar when Winn Stewart passed......geez what memories..... :lol:Hey Smiley, Lloyd got me a job with the Bobby Albright band at Bigger'n Dallas back in 84 I think///also the last place I saw Joe Ely and Davis McClarty (Joe's drummer) too. |

Larry was a regular at the old Red Raider club in the late 70s early 80s. Did anyone ever know a steel player from that era named Howard Isaacs,,,I think he was from Leveland,,,played a black Emmons? He played steel when I played guitar for Bob McCree at the Village Lounge on Brownfield hwy. Anyone know or know Bob McCree?? |

First time I got in a night club was The Red Raider in Lubbock (1979) and Larry was playing that left handed acoustic guitar tuned Open G. I have a email to Lloyd Maines to find out the latest on Larry.

I played lead guitar in Trider's band in 1979-80 at the Red Raider. Part of my job was tuning his guitar. It was tuned to an open "E" chord right handed and he played it upside down left handed. He was a good rhythm player and could play all the minors, diminished, augmented etc. chords he needed to. We did rehearse 5 days a week and the band was tight. Larry was not a great singer but knew how to pick songs he could sing and never sang something he couldn't do well. He insisted on professional appearance and we played consistently well as a unit.
Larry had to be challenged and one thing he did was change musicians every so often just because he was bored, thus the constant rehearsal. I left Lubbock shortly after I was replaced by Larry Welborn, a great player who had worked on and off for Trider for years.
I regret that I lost track of Trider, but my pal Chuck Cusimano ran into Larry in Las Vegas during the NFR rodeo in 1989.He was working cleaning drapes in casinos and was no longer playing. That is the last I have heard and would sure like to know where he is as I'd like to hook up with him again.

Yes, I ran into Larry in Vegas in 1989, one day when I was playing Lead guitar and fronting the band for Monty "Hawkeye" Henson. Larry had the house band in Lubbock at the Red Raider, and then left town, and I had the house band at the R.Raider for about 6 or 7 months, and then he came back. My good friend Duane worked for Trider quite a while. When I saw Larry trider in Vegas, he was working for a Drapery cleaning company, and He said he was making more money than he ever did in the music business. I always had a huge respect for him as a successful Bandleader. He made his band "TEAM PLAYERS" and that's the secret. (It's also hard to do.) _________________ They call it FILL 'cause it goes in the holes. Don't cover up the singer.

Thanks for the nice words Baxter,
You're right about one thing for sure, and Billy Martin and I were just saying this the other night, and so were me and my good friend, Duane Brown. There was a time when you could walk into any bar in Lubbock that had a live country house band, and they would blow your doors off! Remeber Curly Cook, and Country Company? How about the house band at the Cow Palace, and Bobby Albrights great band? There were other bands that toured locally, even if they didn't have a sit down gig. Emil Schattell, Tiny Lynn? Larry Kinney? Jack Tyson? (Now there's a couple a big'uns fer ya) Of course, the Maines Brothers, Rick and Lynn Sanchez, Eddy and Judy? I don't mean to sound harsh, but we called one of the places "The Geritol Mannor" and they had a fine band too.
I really appreciate being in the company of some of these great bands. Thanks Baxter! hey, are you still bla... well, you know! _________________ They call it FILL 'cause it goes in the holes. Don't cover up the singer. |

I played steel for Curley Cook and Country Company at Bigger N Dallas, early 70's. The club owner was a good looking completely wild woman..can't remember her name, but the band had it up to their eyebrows with Curley so we fired him...That's when Al Brumley took over....yep...Tom's brother. I called him in Nashville and got him to come to Lubbock... lasted awhile longer. It was a great band and what a honky tonk! _________________ Sho Pro SD10 and Nashville 400 & 112 |

Baxter,,,WHAT???,,,he must be in his 80s!!!! He was a barber cutting my hair when I was like 14-15,,,I think besides his dad there were several brothers or relatives that were barbers. I don't suppose you know of a bass player around Lubbock named Henry (?),,don't remember his last name,,,tall thin guy back in the early 70s,,,think he was a butcher,,,worked in a meat market? |
