I have a friend wanting a recommendation for an effects processor (similar to the old Peavey ProFex). Does anyone have a recommendation as to a brand and model? ...Tom |

Tom, I would recommend the Digitech RP150 or RP155, both have a great selection of effects and the reverb is Lexicon.Another good choice would be the Pod XT. _________________ MSA Millenium SD10, GK MB200, Sica 12inch cab, Joyo American Sound Pedal/ Jay Ganz Straight Ahead amp, Telonics 15inch in Peavey cab, Digitech RP150, Peterson tuner.Hilton volume pedal.Scott Dixon seat and guitar flight case. |

Tom,
I have both units Malcom recommends and they both work well. The 155 is the easiest to understand and use out of the box. "Tones" can be tweaked using the free X-Edit program from Digitech.
The XT is a little more complex. Not quite as easy to use out of the box, and Pod tones can be tweaked using the GearBox and Line 6 Monkey programs from Line 6.
Several Forum members have "tones" for both units on their websites. _________________ 1974 Marlen S-12 1968 Tele 1969 Martin D-35H |

I`m in the process of trying to figure out the Pod HD desktop into a PA system only, Works well with my Vegas 400, Some sounds will actually floor you.... It seems there is an unknown amount of distortion presets in it that I dont care for at all ( I`m new to this Pod idea ) and have not found the answer with it .... YET, I believe that once you figure out how to make your own preset sound, that you will still need your heavy amp with the big speaker to be happy, Only my ignorant opinion at this point....its only been one week, How long must it take ?
What I do like about it Is: You can build a set list of 100 songs or more, Each having its own modeled design by you, then name each song with its title, creating an actual set list when playing, then turn the knob to the next song (easy) Example :
1A : Ave Maria
1B : Steel guitar Jubilee
1C : Foggy Mountain Breakdown
1D : Mustang Sally
2A : Blues
2B : Bell sounds
and so on...
Each song title will be memorized with the modeling you created for that song (you gotta get into the designers head a little bit) I dont have the knowledge for all the devices (modulation, phasers,Bass shifters, etc...) that are in it, Thats all I know about it for now, having a little direction with it of what it will do, will help, and I may have answered some of my own personal questions about it ....imagine that _________________ SO MANY LURES, SO LITTLE TIME.... |

The presets that come with the 155 and xt are not useful for most players. They seem suited for metalheads and teen boys. Way too much distortion for me, too.
Start simple, Craig! Turn every effect off except for a hall (or cathedral) reverb for Ave Maria. Then add a little echo, etc. This way, you can actually hear what you are doing. _________________ 1974 Marlen S-12 1968 Tele 1969 Martin D-35H |

I have the RP255 - it's got a few more things than the 155's including a pedal that can be used for a wah (or many other things). It's got a lot going for it, lots of steel relevant stuff: compressor, reverb, delay, touch wah and also a rotary type effect, pitch changers (like the old MXR Blue Box), chorus, etc. It's true that the presets aren't useful for steel, but with some experimentation you can set up EQ as in a steel voiced amp (e.g., mid freq = mid shift, bass freq, treble freq, levels on each and go from there. There's a "direct" option for your amp so you can choose direct and add whatever effects you choose. The different setups can be saved as user presets and easily selected as the situation calls for. IMHO it's at least worth a try. I'm using it with a '78 Webb, NV112, and can be used with earphones as a practice amp. I paid $150 for the RP255; the 155's are $50 less but each can be had for less.
I'm still experimenting which can be both complicated and fun. The forum reviews on the 155 are worth reading. |

The TC Electronics M1 XL... really Superior unit. I have been using outboard gear like this forever. I bought an spx90 the day they came out.. The reverbs and delays are certainly studio quality and it is considered studio quality and you can find them on ebay for 3-$400... Great unit.. You do need to use balanced cables but that really is not an issue.... |
