Way back when I first started playing out, some of the bands around did a novelty song called "The Birthday Cake"..... I'd forgotten all about it until the other night we actually got a request for it from this old dude (older than me)... I remember the melody pretty good but I can only remember the opening line of the lyrics. It went something like "I don't want it all, I just want some, some of what you're sittin' on"......... I know some of my fellow "oldies" remember the song. Anyone have the lyrics?....Thanks, JH in Va.

I remember this song being sung by various singers in the clubs and joints over the years. I'm really shocked that you want to sing this song, but I can't remembner the words either. Do you remember back in So. Calif. a guy named "OMO THE HOBO". He had a little Song Book he would sell with alternate party lyrics to various songs for a couple of bucks.

Jerry, the versions I have heard can't be mentioned here. It was a very adult novelty song. Shocked

When I was a kid I played a rock and roll type song called "Birthday Cake". I never heard a recording of it, only the bandstand version by the singer I was playing behind. Hadn't thought of the song in years. I remember a couple of lines of the lyrics but I don't think I will post them here Devil

Billy, I'm sorry you're shocked.... Embarassed But I don't remember anything in the song that was really bad... It was all double meaning lyrics and you could look at it as harmless or risque whichever you wanted. Man, "Omo the Hobo". I sure do remember him! He came into probably every club I'd ever played in at one time or another and always wanted to sing for tips during our breaks. He even had some records that he'd hawk from time to time. I saw him in Blackie's store one time getting strings for his cheap old flattop that he used. Back to the Birthday Cake song...... I don't wanna sing it but one of the guys I pick for does.....JH in Va.

Hey Jerry ! I was only "putting you on". How many times have us sidemen made up our own sometimes off-color lyrics on the Bandstand to try to break up the guy singing. Smile Razz Razz

I always knew it as the "Birthday Cake Boogie", with the famous line "Get your finger out of it, it don't belong to you".

(Sounds like something Tubby Boots or Rusty Warren would have written Laughing )

It's probably on youTube...everything else is. Rolling Eyes

If I had a dollar for every time I've played that song, I could probably buy a new Franklin guitar. Alien

Hey Charles, thanks for posting that. That was some pretty hot non pedal steel guitar on that Skeets MacDonald recording. He called out the player's name but I couldn't catch it. Do you know who played it on that recording?.......Thanks, JH in Va.

Sounds to me like he is saying Johnny White. That would make sense since bio info on Skeeter says he played for a while with Johnny White and the Rhythm Riders.

Here's an older Forum thread on Skeets

The thread contains this vid which shows him playing on TV in 1959...
