I just received an email from Gary Glisson and here is what is it says:

I'm writing this with tears in my eyes, my family and I came down here to Lucena,Philippines for a short vacation, unfortunately we were mugged at the park of the hotel where we stayed all cash, credit card and mobile phone were stolen off us but luckily we still have our passports with us.

We've been to the Embassy and the Police here but they're not helping issues at all the bad news is our flight will be leaving in less than 8-hrs from now but we're having problems settling the hotel bills and the hotel manager won't let us leave until we settle the bills.
Am freaked out at the moment! I'll need your help (LOAN) financially. I promise to make the refund once we get back home. Please let me know if you can help and i need you to keep checking your email because it's the only i can reach you.
Gary

I think someone is using Gary's identity to scam some money from forum members. The return email address is steelguitarcrazy(@)aol.com.

If this really happened, then Gary needs to go to the U.S. Embassy for help.

I had this same thing happen several months back. Even the wording is identical. "writing with tears in my eyes". Someone hacked the email account. In my case, everyone in my email address book got the email and mine too was from the Phillapines. And, since it has happened to two Forum members, they must be entering through the Forum?

I got a similar email from "Gary Glisson," subject line "I need your help." I bought an awesome resonator from Gary, a few years ago, and found him to be a quiet, honest, and humble man...it just didn't seem like something he'd do. So, I didn't open the email. DELETE. I'm sure if Gary has a need he'd let it be known on the Forum.

My own email got hacked a couple weeks ago, and I think clicking a video link on Facebook was the source of my trouble. Very frustrating.

I got the same email today. There is no way U.S. Embassy would not help an American citizen in situation like this. But I don't know for sure. If something like this ever happens to any forum member, I wouldn't have a problem helping with some cash, but that member should contact Bob and then have Bob post something about it, only in that case I would jump on the board...

Just received the exact same email myself. I figured I would come here to check the validity of this and viola
as I suspected, "scam alert. I wouldn't have a problem helping anyone, especially a forum member legitimately in need, but scammers are the scourge of the earth.

Here's the original scam alert from Snopes.com:
http://www.snopes.com/fraud/distress/family.asp

It was the subject of an article in the Chicago Tribune last year.

EasyKey.net gives some good advice.

The email accounts of our Forum friends have been hacked in the past:

So...any tips on how to avoid email accounts from being hacked?
Is it something as simple as having a too short (or too obvious) password that a computer can generate?

I know Gary well , for over 30 years now and I can vouch for what he's saying. There's no way he would go on a vacation anywhere and leave his stable of fine Emmons guitars at home alone. Smile I got one of those emails too and called him right away.
Come see me , Gary , glad you're back.
