I wanted to pulse everyone as I'm still learning. I've heard there were, at one time, matchbox units that didn't have a gain knob. The reason I ask is that my amp sounds ALMOST good direct, but I like what the matchbox adds with my pot pedal, however, when I bring the gain past 3 or 4 (on ONE of my guitars) it starts to drive the amp just a tad which is no bueno (perhaps just adds some lows - not sure). Is the gain level the effect of the unit itself, or strictly as it states, a DB gain? My guess is to match the volume of the amp without the effect to that when it is plugged in, and then adjust the tone to your liking. I guess my question is "Does the gain knob have anything to do with how much the impedance will be mactched?"

I don't have one, my buffer of choice is an Izzy Plus.
But I do know that "Gain" means boost, aka amplification. Therefore, I'd expect increases in a knob so marked to drive the amp.
I wouldn't expect such a knob to act like Brad Sarno's Vari-Z.

I had an original Matchbox at one time, the little one that clipped on the leg of the guitar and had one pot. Is that the one you're talking about?

If so, in my case it a 'tone' control, and it was done with impedance matching. I believe I measured it once and it was essentially unity gain regardless of the pot position.
