Hey guys. A friend is building me a 10 string lap steel and I need some help with a couple things. Want string spacing like old Gibson Console Grand. Also want long scale higher tension, at least I think I do. Gonna go with an E9/13 type tuning. Does the nut measure different than bridge? Already have Lawrence 705 and tuners. Any help would be appreciated. I am really into old western swing and early jazz, country and rockabilly if that helps any. Need some numbers to give my friend building the beast. Thanks.

Bridge vs nut string spacing: if spacing is what you mean, there are two schools, I prefer complete parallel, but most steels narrow towards the nut and is the common standard.

After looking up scale lenghts I am leaning toward 22 1/2 for this project. Thinking 10 strings may want to use heavier gauges on top, plus easier slants with lot of strings. May split the difference and go with 23.

Tom;
I like 23" scale with 3/8" string parallel spacing. Slants work out very well.
You will need to be sure to use a pickup that will align with the 3/8" spacing.
Here's my design for a nut...
