JERRY BYRD used to always set his amp on the floor behind his standing position. I've seen SPEEDY WEST play with his amp at his feet or in front of him. NOEL BOGGS used to have his up on a chair, tilted upward toward the ceiling.
How do the majority of you folks......position your amps when on a bandstand?
With respect to the lead-guitarist..........how many of you prefer to be set-up right next to him as opposed to todays' more common practice, on opposite sides of the super wide stage from each other? |

I play next to the bass player so I am set up next to his amp. My amp is good and loud so I can set its volume so that everyone in the band can hear me. We're really good at getting our levels right on the money. _________________ Brian |

I adjust my amp position to fit the situation.
1. When playing a large auditorium with a band I have my amp directly behind me if miked.
2. If I am not miked I will use a larger amp (or two)
and not sit in front of it but off to the side a little. (Playing much louder of course)
3. For solo/duo gigs I place my smaller PA speakers on either side of me and my steel amp near but directed mostly toward the audience.
4. I have four different amp/speaker combinations for different sized gigs. (Sometimes I use a leslie speaker in addition to the amp's internal speakers}
I even have some battery powered mini amps for music therapy hospital room visits, or living room concerts.

I like having the amp and guitar acoustically coupled... a smaller amp aimed up at the bottom of the guitar will do that, and for folks that like the feel of playing *loud* (and you know who you are!) this is the effect you're going for, I believe. Using the amp closer to the guitar keeps that effect going, even outdoors. |

Ray,
At the club we've been playing lately (Sweetwater in Mill Valley) the amps aren't miked. I'm stage left and place mine behind me at 45 degree angle so the audience and the band can hear. Seems to work.

Ray,
I agree with Stephen. Having the steel guitar amp (or monitor speaker in case I am DI'ed) near enough to know the sound I am creating is for me most important. Monitors are usually placed in front facing me but if I use a steel amp, I prefer it anywhere close to me, back is fine.
I do not often play with another lead guitar, so no firm opinions regarding your second question. In general, I think it is better to be closer for those vital visual clues....
