Do psg's from the same manufacturer sound the same even with different types of bodys? To clarify, would an Emmons P/P S-10 or SD-10 have the same sound as an Emmons D-10? I suppose differences like lacquer vs mica or wood vs mica might have some expected differences, but assuming all construction except body size and mass differences, does a S-10 sound the same as an SD-10, as a D10 from a given manufacturer? We know that guitars from different manufacturers sound different, and even 2 guitars of the same model can have slight difference in sound. Does taking off the back neck ala Lloyd Green did change the sound of that guitar? Does anyone have a couple of guitar like a Sho-Bud S10 and D10 to compare them? If different, how so? Real curious, but not wealthy enough to buy some to check it out. Larry Robertson _________________ Website: www.Music2myEars.net

In my experience, they do not necessarily sound the same. I have had, for example, a few S10 Emmons pushpulls and a D10 pushpull, and the two S10s sounded similar to each other, but different from the D10. And then again, different D10's or S10's or SD10's (same mfr) can sound different from one another too. And some of this has to do with the acuity of your hearing and listening, while in other cases, it's pretty obvious to almost anyone. So, in my experience, it can be pretty variable, even within a brand. _________________ www.JimCohen.com

The idea that guitars with a different body size may sound different does not necessarily mean that the body size is what's causing the difference. (That's called a "hasty generalization", in some circles.) There are many other factors that might contribute to differences in their sound, but as the body size is the most obvious difference, many assume that's the sole cause. |

Thanks for the feedback guys. Jim's experience with the 2 shobuds is kind of what I expected. Donnie, you are correct from a logical point of view. I've had 4 or 5 steels in my past and they all sounded different, but I have never had 2 of the same manufacturer and design at the same time. I would suppose that even guitars from the same manufacturer, but of different design (changer diff's, scale length, etc) would certainly sound different even with the same body. I guess very few of us have had (for instance) a P/P D10 and a P/P S10 or SD10; or a Carter D10 and S10; or even a Shobud LG S10 and the double neck equivalent. (Would that be a Pro II?) Anyway, I'm looking forward to any experiences/ thoughts that anyone can contribute. I am hoping to buy another steel soon and would like the info for guidance.
