I've seen a little bit of discussion on the Forum regarding these apps. Do you use a cable between the guitar and the phone?
Maybe this would be a good spot for some discussion about the pros and cons of the various tuner apps that are available.

You can use a cable, or you can just put the phone on top of your amp and play the notes out loud.

I use the GStrings free tuner on my android phone. I don't have a plugin cable, so just play through the amp with the phone in my lap. It tracks pretty well even at low volumes

| I had to to a factory reset on my android phone last night and put three tuners back on it. I like DaTuner, it is digital and changes colors and you can adjust it for background noise. I Installed a strobe tuner too but haven't tried it yet. |

Cleartune is popular for both Android and iPhone/iPad. On my iPad, I can even set up custom tunings for my Steel, don't know if that is available in the other versions.
Peterson has a strobe tuner app for the iPhone/iPad, but it is not customizeable. According to a response from Peterson on Facebook a customizeable version is in the works. They do not have an Android version. |

I like the Petersen iPhone to 1/4" cable. Rock solid. I'm using Tune-Up and like it a lot. Both on a 3rd gen iPod touch and an iPhone. Don't know about 'droid options. ( I tend to stay away from things that end with "iod" if you know what I mean. : ). )

Check out the iRig for a way to plug in.
Funny thing is the apps on iPads and phones work better than most dedicated tuners. Way more processing power.

| You can also just use a 1/4" --> 1/8" adapter and a regular instrument cable to hook to the phone tuner. |

A regular adapter doesn`t work with iPhone. The jack is tip-ring-ring-sleeve.
The audio in is the second ring and ground, if I remember right. I made a special cable with a 1/4 plug and a four condutor 1/8 with only the audio in connected.

The more I use the iPhone/iPod app called TuneUp, the more I like it. It appears that it has tweak-able tunings so you can go in and edit and sweeten it up as you wish. This app is made by/for PlanetWaves. The strobe tuner looks like the dial on the TurboTuner pedal. Uses the iPhone mic nicely, but for noisy bandstands, I like to use it with the Peterson cable adaptor.

Does Apple conform to standard, using 2nd ring and sleeve?

The Android phones do use a Tip/Ring/Ring/Sleeve connector for audio but I don't see anyplace that talks about using this connector as an audio input to the phone. The Android headset does have a right/left speaker bud and a mic that inputs to the phone so it must be possible. I see a lot of posts on other forums asking for an Android audio input cable but no good answers or specs on what the connection or line levels might be.
The DaTuner author is working on a fix to allow my Galaxy Nexus to handle custom presets. Since my phone has SD storage but not on a separate HD card, DaTuner does not store the csv file in SD storage. So Iphone is a fixed set of hardware where Android devices don't all have the same hardware architecture or features.

I just got an email from the developer of GStrings.
That app doesn't support custom tunings, but if you supply him with numbers that arent copyrighted, he will introduce pedal steel temperaments in the next version.

This works really well for me. iRig is way overpriced but does work very well. Tuning on stage during a gig with iRig works great. Using the mic in the iphone on stage with all the noise doesn't work for me at all. |

Lane - thanks for the app suggestions. Somehow I don't seem to 'default' to using Google when looking for something - I think it's an age thing!
Now all I need to do is figure out how the Blackberry works and I'm good to go!
