Are you referring to bar placement; notes, picking, timing or tuning?

Ray,
Use your ears not your eyes. You are probably moving the bar to where your ears tell you is correct pitch.

Ray,

When I was learning slants I'd check each note with a tuner. Also practicing in the dark can be helpful. Keep at it.

Today I hooked up a recorder. I'm not as bad off as I thought. Guess my ears are playing tricks on me. Guess I will keep at it.

Link to Paul Franklins bar hand exercise.

This is a great exercise for improving bar hand accuracy. Thanks again to PF!

Bill, if you could do it before, you can do it again. It will just take time to get back into it.
Like Ian said...I like to play with the lights off in the dark a couple of times per week, that really helps me use my ears.

Bill I didn't mean to be a smart a**. It's just that playing the steel guitar has so many skills that require accuracy that it is difficult at times to pin point a poster's question.

This may be a boring and mundane way of working on your accuracy; however, being able to pick out the scales with dead accuracy will help you to no end. If you can't hit the scales dead on, then you will not hit anything with any accuracy. I know that practicing scales is as boring as watching grass grow; however, the long term benefits that are derived from this boring exercise can't be over exemplified.

Do you do bar slants with your pedal steel?

Les, I think I just need to put more time into it. I haven't played any in about a year. I never thought I could get so sloppy in that short time. I started recording myself and things are not as bad as I thought. Just need work.
Going to sit in with a band this weekend. If I get sent home I will know I do have a problem ! LOL Very Happy

Speed IS the byproduct of accuracy. Maybe slow down your tempo until you can play it and then increase the tempo 2 clicks until you can play accurately at that speed.

Just my 2 cents

Speed Is a byproduct of accuracy.

Practice at a tempo you can play and when you can play it at speed, move the metronome up 2 clicks until you can play at that tempo and so on.
