Topic: Your favorite steel guitar recording ? |

| I am sure this is an old topic that has been tossed around many times before, but, its also probably one where your response changes also. I am stuck on Jimmy Day's Steel and Strings album from the 60s. It probably has alot to do with nostalgia, since it was the first steel recording (vinyl) I ever bought back in 1969 or so, but I still love to listen to the tunes, his tone and touch, on some of those great old classic country tunes. How about you guys ? ( i hope I am posting this in the correct section) |

I would have to say that Steve Polusek's album (Let the Games Begin) ranks way up there with me on favorite steel recordings. His tone, intonation, choice of songs and the arrangements are just out of this world.

| Buddy Emmons 60s jazz record... I will never forget my Dads reaction as he listened to it the first time, I was 10 or 11... Still love the rawness of it... It was ground breaking even though I'v read that Buddy thought it was a disaster in some ways... He had to use a borrowed amp that distorted and then the record company put the wrong steel on the cover.... |

Another hand up here for Steve Palousek's Let The Games Begin.
Equally as brilliant is Buck Reid's Work In Progress CD, which is astounding for the sublime tone, the original musical content and the technical ability.
Another favourite of mine is Mike Johnson's solo CD.

| Good responses so far...my hope was maybe to learn about some other cds people were listening to get ideas to purchase...I have to agree about Steve Palousek's cd....another favorite of mine is Doug Jernigan and Carco Clave's cd on Broadway...that one stays in my rotation alot also. |

Speedy West's Guitar Spectacular. I love the compositions, the recording quality, and the supporting musicians,
including Billy Strange and Roy Lanham sound great. This record got me hooked on steel guitar in the 80s.

| No doubt for me it's Jimmy Day's Steel and Strings album. Everytime I hear it, my mind goes back to the prime of Jim Reeves, Patsy Cline, Hank Lockland and others. I'm not old enough to remember Jim Reeves or Patsy, but it is the most classic taste of these artists songs made popular in the late fifties and sixties. The tone Day got on that album has never been matched. Someone asked why no one else could get that tone; and the reply was, "Because they can't." |

| The fairly recent release by Bill Stafford entitled "Unforgettable Melodies" rates VERY high with me. Tone to the bone...great chords...he makes that 14 string EXCEL sing like a nightengale. I personally place it very, very high |
