Hi guys, Jesse passed away recently and Gene asked me to find out some info on this Sho~Bud. Jesse played steel w/Gene when they were young. I don't know much about Sho~Buds, but would like to get as much info as possible. Can anyone give me some thoughts on this guitar? It also has a Sho~Bud volume pedal in it's compartment in the case. I have a few more pictures and can put them in a subsequent post. Thanks, Danny

I can tell you that it was built approximately 8/3/1973.

To the best of my knowledge (which is suspect), it was late '73 to early '74. The caveat is that even though the models transitioned to the two hole pulls w/barrels, there was still inventory on the rack components. If a customer specifically wanted a rack and barrel system at a later date, Sho-Bud would build it.
I can't find my reference but I believe that I saw a R&B build, that by the S/N dated somewhere out in '76-'77.
The last Professional that I have listed in the database was about 1/18/74. That doesn't mean that there weren't more built or rack & barrel used futher out on the 6139's (S10) or special builds.
I spoke with David and Harry Jackson at Dallas this year and they said that they had/maintained inventory on the barrels through the end of all production as they continued to use them for the half stop assemblies.
Remember- 'There are no rules with Sho-Buds!'
That's what makes this such a fun mystery!

If I remember correctly, the 6139 was the fore-runner of the Pro I. It was pretty much "The Professional" in a single neck design. The one in the picture appears to have a modified Day setup, in that the 3rd pedal only raises string 5, and not 10 as well. Going by the traces left on the bottom, it was maybe modified after originally having an Emmons setup, at least judging by the move of the knee lever from near the first pedal to closer to the 3rd pedal.
Nice looking guitar for it's age. Looks to still be in pretty nice shape. |
