I find it amusing all the experts slamming the Carter Starter and yet there is
one on eBay right now with 70 bids and it is at $650.00. Somebody values them.  |

It's a good way for somebody wanting to try to play without risking a ton of $$$. Most folks around my neck of the woods have never seen a PSG in the flesh, so wouldn't know the difference. I got taken several times when I was starting out.. Hopefully those times are gone..

It may get somebody started on the path, which was its intended duty. When the new owner gets either better at playing, or sick of trying, it will resurface on ebay. Reminds me of a bad taco, but heh...

1- Sometimes you can get a great deal on a steel on E-bay (as I did) but often steels there are overpriced. And a person who wants to learn to play but doesn't know much is likely to pay too much.
2- The Carter Starter is not a well made instrument, but as far as I know, when it was introduced in 2004(?) it was the only student guitar available with 4 knee levers. Now we have others like the Stage One and Legend (formerly the Carpsteel.) But at the time there was not much else available for a newbie, and certainly nothing in its price range with the 4 levers.
There are undoubtedly a number of accomplished players today who learned on a CS and then went on to buy a better guitar. Regardless of how we may feel about the CS itself, our community as a whole owes John Fabian and Bud Carter a debt of gratitude for giving everybody who learned on one the opportunity to buy a cheap student guitar had enough knee levers.

To suggest that the price at closing on EBay is a reasonable reflection of the realistic, or actual, or intrinsic value of something is unbelievably naive.

I don't think so,at least not in my case.I owned one,rebuilt it ,then after that it was a decent guitar.Too cheaply made & people have all kinds of trouble with the knee lever bending plus other things happening to them.It do have a good tone tho.  |

Like it or not, ebay has a huge impact on the "value" of almost everything these days. My son runs a pawn shop, and when they are in doubt as to the value of an item that somebody brings in- the first thing they do is look for like items in completed auctions. They are not ruled by the information, but are guided by it in many instances. If the average selling price for an item is set at a certain amount (actual selling prices, not asking prices), then the "value" can be measured statistically. Therefore, ebay data sets pricing far beyond its own sphere.
If ten CS guitars sold there for $1200.00, the overall sales pricing would jump higher in non-ebay stores which depend on the sales amounts generated from auctions- thereby increasing the prices across the board over time. If there is a demand for a particular item, and a limited supply, prices will rise whether or not the item is "worth" the higher figure.
