I know the place.
Drove by it every morning on my way to work.
Saw Danny Gatton there many years ago.
I think it had a different name then.
Too many years ago to be sure on that.

I have not seen nor spoken with any of that crowd since 1974, when I was living in Somerville and playing with the New Lee Highway Boys. I believe a young John Macy was playing a real nice D10 with him at the time and trying to talk the kid with the Maverick into buying a real guitar. I was offered (and turned down!?!) a beautiful square-neck dobro by one of the denizens of our regular Harvard Square gig. What a lot of memories you have stirred up, I don't remember any other names really but I've still got an old glossy 8x10 photo of John and the band then...

I have been reading your posts for years and never put two plus two together to remember you were a part of that scene... Those were some awesome times...

Hey John, when did you quit that gig? I think I may have met you at a show in DC near the end of your run with them, mid 70s sometime?
I came up a little later when John was looking for a new steel player and played one gig with them at Boston College; they never made a firm offer and I wasn't sold on moving there so that was that (I moved to Austin to play with Doug Sahm instead). I later crossed paths with John much later (10 years ago maybe) when he opened a Patty Loveless show and last saw him a few years later looking a little worse for wear while hanging out one afternoon at the upstairs bar at the Middle East in Central Square; we had a beer and talked for a while. I was really sad to hear it when he passed....
My brother and his wife live in Somerville, I passed this on to them and they are going to the show; I may try to come up but probably won't be able. But I'll be there in spirit. FWIW the awesome guitarist Duke Levine (who you may know) has been doing a regular Sunday afternoon gig at "Radio" right down the block from this club; worth catching too.
And ya gotta love the bar's slogan:

We may have, Pete...I moved to Colorado in February of '76 to play with Michael Murphey...hard to remember a lot of that stuff back then...seems so long ago and some days it feels like yesterday...have your brother say hey if he comes...and I love Duke...

...and anybody tells you they can remember a lot of that stuff wasn't there 
What I DO remember is JLW's quiet command of the space around him, on or off the stage. I admired and learned from his scientific awareness of what it takes to present a quality stage show. It was always looking good, sounding good, acting good, always maintaining connection with the audience, and everybody left feeling good afterwards. It seems simple enough but so very few "artists" even try.... |

| When Buddy Emmons came up to Mass to play a show in '77, JLW was a guest artist and did a bunch of his original tunes. We (including Buddy) backed him up and it was a great set. I'm so glad I have a video of that concert. It was amazing. |
