What is this guy doing to fill, during the vocals and fiddle break?

I can't see if he's using the C6 or E9 neck.
I definitely can't see what strings and what order.

Thanks

It looks like he's playing rhythm on the E9th.

One of the first things I was told when I started playing steel was to play chords/rhythm while the singer does his thing, especially on the verse, then do a bit of fill in on the course.Thought everybody knew that. Confused Confused

Same with guitar,it's just professional & makes you look like you know what you're doing. Laughing Laughing

While there is nothing wrong with playing rhythm, If you have than 4 pieces on stage, the sound can get cluttered in a hurry.

That's why Jeff Newman urged his students to just put their hands in their laps and watch the show. I try to add rhythmic figures only when they add something missing (in stuff with a 50s groove, the keyboard and I swap duties: one of us chops 8s and one chops on 1, then we swap)

Carco is doing exactly what he should be doing in a 4-piece band... QUIET chord backing while the fiddle player plays the fills behind the vocalist. Notice that the fiddle player does the same thing when Carco plays his fills behind the singer. She vamps the same style of chord backing on her fiddle.

Carco better back up that fiddle player nicely. He's married to her.

E9th neck, all 8th notes. This is the pattern for a measure of A. Pedals down for a measure of D. Pedals down at 7th fret for a measure of E.

Carco is a very under-rated player in my opinion. Very tasteful, and always gets great tone. Real pro. And Mickey's right, KILLER 6 string player too!

I think Carco probably plays EVERYTHING very well. I've even used him in the studio on trumpet, and he nailed it. Consummate pro.

Carco is a doing a very tastefully done rythm , as he is a masterfull ensemble player. My opinion , it's exactly what is called for in that situation. If your counting the beats,as in one and two and three and four, Carco is playing the "ands". Also, as far as I can tell its three pieces, and only one can play a chord (steel). I have to agree that he is a really great musician, he is a real treat if you get the chance to hear him.

You can also play tic-tac on the C neck, especially in a shuffle. Sounds good behind a fiddle.

Tic-tac is doubling the bass line on a tic-tac bass, or baritone guitar, or a regular guitar or steel. It's on a lot of shuffles, and Leon Rhodes has been doing it on the Opry for a long time.

Using the C6th tuning....... E C A G E C# C (Top down.)

Does ANYONE you know, merely play the 2nd, 3rd and 5th strings in a sustained pattern on only the first and second beats of each measure?

I know a lot of fellows used to do this before they started rewriting the book..........

Finally a singer you can actually hear without 10 other instruments all trying to play at the same time.
this seems to be the new thing for newer players.
Last friday I went to a jam session this is the second in a ROW I had my parts walked on by rude players who just play all the way through a song,

There are only 3 instruments in this video as far I as I can see Steel Fiddle Bass notice how clean it sounds the man with steel is playing rhythm while fiddle is playing sounds GREAT and uncluttered,
David Church came to my home a few yrs ago we also played 3 piece with bass, a flat top and steel
