The next Austin Steel Guitar Co-op monthly jam will be Sunday, April 8 from 2-5 p.m. at the 290 West Bar & Grill, 12013 Highway 290 West, Austin, TX. Can't think of a better way to spend Easter...
The new format includes a featured artist each month. Herb Steiner is back in the saddle (after breaking his foot in an auto accident in Feb.) and will be kicking off the afternoon with a special non-pedal set, with Rob Harding on guitar, Charlie Irwin on bass, and Karen Biller on drums. Come say hello to Herb.
The back-up musicians for the afternoon will be Karen Biller on drums, and Charlie Irwin on bass. They can handle anything from Hawaiian and traditional country to jazz. Bring your charts.
John Allison will be bringing some of his 8-string console steel guitars out for display and sampling. Folks are encouraged to bring any gear or instruments for sale or show-and-tell.
Ken Metcalf is busy on a construction project in San Antonio, so he gave me the go -ahead to post this and he'll be sending out the newsletter in a couple days. |

Yes, it's true! I will be playing a set of swing tunes with some very worthy constituents for the first part of the meeting, and then there will be some excellent live musicians backing up the round-robin.
And there will be some Allison non-pedal console guitars there for inspection and... dare I say it?.... purchase!
This should be fun for me since I haven't played onstage in over 2 months. Come hear me and count the clams!! _________________ My rig: Infinity and Telonics.

Rob Harding called today and told me he couldn't make the gig, so I got on the horn and lo and behold, FLOYD DOMINO will be playing piano and adding his suave and debonair panache to the occasion.
'Twill be a fun show, I'm sure! _________________ My rig: Infinity and Telonics.

Hi Manny- Yes, I'll be attending -- I live in Austin now. Also, we just talked Neil Flanz into coming out to the jam today -- I'm going to go pick him up! Anthony Locke is planning to be there, along with Eric Ebner who makes those fabulous Tribotone bars, and luthier John Allison who will be bringing some of his beautiful steels for display and sampling. Also heard from pedal steeler and bottleneck blueswoman Lauren Ellis that she will be coming out. |

The jam today was a blast. Herb Steiner took charge and played a killer swingin' set with Floyd Domino on piano, Karen Biller on drums and Charlie Irwin on bass. After that various steelers took turns playing a tune with the band, then we did some round robins. Steelers included Billy Phelps, Anthony Locke, Stephen Cowell, John Allison and yours truly.
Backup musicians Karen Biller and Charlie Irwin were joined by guitarists Rob Harding and Lauren Ellis, who both did some great vocals along with Ken Metcalf.
Eric Ebner from Tribotone steel bars with there and everyone admired John Allison's beautiful 8-string steels, along with his unique triple-neck with a pedal set-up for the middle neck. The venerable Neil Flanz was in the house. Other folks came out to watch and hobnob, including Ted Branson from KOOP radio, and Linda Branson, another pillar of the Austin music community. People munched on hot dogs and burgers from the grill right outside the door. What a great afternoon!
Mark your calendars for next month's jam on May 13. Featured artist to be announced...stay tuned! |
