1968 - Billy Walker
1968 - Hugh X. Lewis (whoever the hell that is)
1969 - Cal Smith
The first I can remember was Cal Smith.

I am pretty sure that Bill Mack wrote this song. I don't know if there was a co-writer or not. Bill probably had the first cut on it when he was working for WBAP in Ft Worth.

according to Wikipedia, "drinking champagne" goes all the way back to the 17th century with the coronation of rulers. It does not specify however, just exactly who took the first drink!

Mack wrote this song before he started his radio show in 1969, but I can find no record of him recording it himself on any of his lp's or Big D singles.
Hugh X. Lewis released it in June 1968 on Kapp Records lp "Country Fever".
Cal Smith released it as a single in Sept. 1968 and on an lp of the same name in Dec. 1969, also on the Kapp Label.
Billy Walker released it on Monument lp "I Taught Her Everything She Knows" in Oct. 1968.
Contrary to Wikipedias' it being done by "2 stars", the song has been recorded and released by:
Dean Martin; Faron Young; Ray Price; Jerry Lee Lewis; Don Gibson; Carl Smith; Willie Nelson; Jim Ed Brown and Mickey Gilley.
Have a hard time convincing people these guys weren't "stars!!"

Searching the Web found some interesting info on Bill Mack. Born Bill Smith on 6-4-29, 6-4-32, 6-4-33. Was working for KENS Radio in 1961 when I was stationed at Lackland AFB, along with Charlie Walker.
First recorded Drinkin' Champagne in 1968 for Knapp records.
Also was recorded by Claude Gray.
Bill has written over 250 songs according in WEB info.

Bill did record the song early on, could have been just a demo but I've heard it played on his radio show.
George Strait also recorded a very good version in the 80s..

| When I moved to Kansas City (Missouri) in late 73, there was a DJ on a country radio station that had a recording of that song. It was his signature song and from what some of the locals said I thought he had one of the first recordings. I don't remember the guy's name and he has since passed away. |

Bill was pals with Faron, and whenever we were around Ft. Worth he'd come out and sing with us and a good time was had by all. He's a good ol' boy

I grew up in Ft Worth listening to Bill Mack. In fact, my band used to back him up sometimes.
I have heard Mack's version many times on his radio show. |

I first knew Bill Mack in 1949-50 when he was a DJ in Amarillo, then in 1955 I played steel for him on his TV show in Wichita Falls. In those days Bill hauled his records in the trunk of his car and the band sold them in the isles during intermissions at his shows. His celebrity and song writing success came later.
Seems like I always worked for "stars" before they amounted to anything.
