I've been listening to the Carl Stalling Warner Brothers cartoon music (excellent) and realizing that those lovely pieces and arrangements may have been my first exposure to the steel guitar.

Any idea who the steel player in the Warner Brothers Studio Orchestra was? Alivino Rey?

Just curious, I'd love to find out who it was, there's some very nice steel work there, for sure.

Best,
LC

The only steel I remember from the old cartoons is the famous gliss from the Loony Tunes intro, which was done by Freddie Tavares.
What other cartoons are you referring to, Larry? I'd like to hear some!

There are at least a few places in the Stalling collection where you can clearly hear a steel guitar (non-pedal).

In the "Anxiety Montage" Track 6, I instantly recall the Warner Bros. cartoon where Sylvester has to spend the night in a spooky old house (with Porky Pig), and the mice stand head to foot under a bedsheet and haunt him. There's this unmistakable creepy steel guitar minor/chromatic octave line, brief, but there.
There are others, and I definitely heard brief steel guitar parts throughout the collection. Episode is "Claws for Alarm", can't find a youtube link.

Still would love to know who the player was... (:

I'm pretty sure the steel on Loony Tunes was Freddie Tavares . Alvino was the absolute master of chords in tune but his single string playing was not too good !! Doesn't sound like Alvino on those Loonie films !! I could be wrong !! Eddie "C" AKA the old geezer
