It makes a nice counter to raising the 6th string G# to A at the same time.

I've been useing it a good while,and have coaxed most of the guy's around the Memphis area into trying it.
Works really well in lot's of phraseing.
I have it on my RKR.

Hi Larry,
The guys at the BMI booth in St.Louis turned me onto this change about 3 years ago. On S12U it's string 12, but I don't see why it wouldn't work on string 10 of a standard E9 10 string.
I guess Zane Beck and Julian Tharpe were hip to this change back in their days.
I have it on the A pedal, so with A+B down you get a huge bottom end that can support several different chord forms depending on what strings you pick.
I have installed it on my Push Pull also and it was pretty easy. I got a rod from Home Depot, then all you need is a bell crank and some lock collars.

Bob,
Do you have unison A's on stings 5 and 6 with A+B down?... or are you using an open A6th tuning where the open tuning is egual to A+B down, and you lower strings to get E9? |

I haven't seen him in about 16 or 17 years but an old bud of mine in Southern California named James O'Rafferty who was a really hot steel player used to do this change. He used it on pedal 1 where he raised his 5th string to C# and lowered the 10th to A. This was pretty cool....he also tuned his 9th string to C# so he got a good A6th. with the A&B pedals down with no D note to pick around.

I lower my 10th with pedal C. Pedals B & C
with 9th lowered to c# gives a good bottom end for A6th, strings 5 thru 10 anyway.It
comes in handy for me since all I have is a single neck.

Is this not the PF pedal change? Lowering 5, 6 and 10 a whole tone?
It becomes strings 5, 6 and 9 on my U-12. Great change.

| Yes, I have it on my left knee vertical lever on my Carter S10 3 & 5. I have that same vertical lever lower my 5th string "B" only a half step to Bb. For you "newbies", the idea is not to play both the 5th & 10th strings at the same time in this instance, but to have more options available in conjunction with other string combinations. -- Marc |

| I have it on two guitars, my 9th string is C#, so pedal 4 lowers 10 -> A and raises strings 5 and 6 to A and C# which makes an A6 with a maj 7th (G#) on top for 8 strings worth of emergency swing. |

I started using that change over 30 years ago! I have it on the same knee lever that lowers the 2nd a full tone. When using it with the "A" pedal (strings 2,6,& 10), it provides the most beautiful IV-V7-I chord resolve on the instrument (IMHO). However, that's not the reason I put it on there. The actual reason I started using it was so I could play Don Rich's licks on the Buck Owens songs.
You see, we didn't always have the luxury of having a lead guitar player. And when we didn't, I was expected to do all those classic "tele-licks". |
