Seems like every time I go to a party, somebody asks for either "Teach Your Children" or "Blue Bayou." Understandable, since to the general public there's no distinction between an E9 pedal steel guitar and a C6 lap steel guitar. They're just requesting the songs they like to hear.

I know you'll never get the full impact of the original arrangement, but has anybody worked out a reasonable approximation of either of these songs on C6 lap steel?

While I've no specific arrangement or method to offer, I have learned to fake/mimic psg sounds and licks on the six-string lap steel. It can be done. I have always been an "ear" player, and I just go for those sounds. One technique is to "pull" a string sharp behind the bar with one's ring finger. Having Garcia's classic psg work on "Children" in my head, I can fashion a reasonable facsimilie on the six-string lap steel. It definitely does not sound as good to me, but to drunk people at a party or bar...you're a hero! The trap is they then start requesting other "impossibilities". Sometimes it's best to disappoint them right off the bat and they'll leave you alone!

Teach Your Children has always always been one of my favorites. From high school to today, if I hear it on the radio, I have to blast it! Smile

Joey Ace and Gregg Thacker tabbed out the intro, solo, and outro for the song. The below link has the three sound clips with tabs.

It's for E9th pedal steel, though. Mikey Adams also has an E9th tutorial for the songs on You Tube.

So what we need now someone who understands both instruments, and could transcibe that to non-pedal.

It would probably have to be in E9th to get near 'that sound'. I'm sure those classic licks can be simulated pretty close, in the right hands...using slants & the volume pedal (but hopefully no string pulls, as I can never get those in tune.. Oh Well ).

...or you could try the Jerry Byrd (according to his book anyway) method and Just Say No. A guitarist friend of mine used to deal with the endless requests for "Stairway To Heaven" by playing this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=txab9pKEIxg.

Then he'd just smile and say "That's it, right?"

Hello from Mr.Boards

I took about 20 minutes a few nights ago , and figured this out for you all.

The Intro to Teach You Children translated to C6 high G is totally EZ to play.

I've done a Video Lesson Teach Your Children << Click<<

Very nice, George. You put a whole new slant on things. I never thought to work up Teach Your Children on the lap steel, but you're only limited by your imagination. Jerry would be proud.

Martin Gross did a pretty cool version of Teach Your Children on dobro, using string pulls. It works nicely on lap steel too.
