I've spent the last year or so with this tune on the backburner and I finally got around to transcribing it in full and making a recording of it. For those of you who don't know this tune, it's from his fantastic and my all-time favorite steel LP, "Guitar Spectacular". I remember buying this record at Matt Umanov's in the 80s and it blew my mind.
Anyway, it really took me a while to get this up to par--I still can't do some of the stuff Speedy did--he had incredible chops, and very unique, but I'll keep working on it.
I recorded all the tracks myself over the last 3 evenings and actually had someone make that beat for me. I played my Fender Custom T-8, necks E9 and F#9. Here goes nothing:
Wild and Woolly West

I have to admit to cheating--I recorded the head and the solo separately (they are on 2 different necks). Speedy didn't have the convenience of doing it like that. He was a monster.
Brad, years ago when i heard Speedy, I thought, "I want to play like that." It took me years to start tackling some of his tunes and I have no idea why it took so long. I guess it was so intimidating to me. You're right: never enough Speedy!
Thanks, everyone. _________________ Links to streaming music, websites, YouTube: Links |

Hi Mike,
Another labor of love! Sounds great, and I bet Speedy would love the homage.

Mike, you are amazing!
And non-pedal?!? I believe Speedy played pedal steel on that tune. Even more amazing. _________________ My rig: Infinity and Telonics.
Son, we live in a world with walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with steel guitars. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinberg? |

Mike: Really great !! If you hadn't told us I would have thought it was actually Speedy. IMHO, Speedy knew how to record instrumentals that appealed to non-musician folks. He was a showman and he knew what sold and how to sell it. A lot of the great Jazz players over the years let their playing become so complex that they would completely lose the General Public and be only selling to Musicians who had a clue to what they were attempting to do. Speedy was sort of a Liberace of the Steel Guitar. |

Thanks guys, you really made my day!
When I got home from running, I just had to fix the rhythm guitar part that has been driving me nuts all day, so I have updated the file with a better rhythm guitar.
Billy, I really appreciate your comments. Speedy's playing has meant a great, great deal to me and I know you were friends. _________________ Links to streaming music, websites, YouTube: Links |

Mike, you are an amazing musician. I know that transcribing Speedy's playing so well has to be the end result of years of study in basic musicianship as well as having ears like a bat, honed by very, very careful dedicated listening. Your steel playing keeps taking big leaps. If I wasn't so lazy and half-assed as a musician you'd be my role model, Mike. |

Every attempt I've made at transcribing Speedys tunes has eneded in complete frustration - such a unique style - and great job on this. _________________ '65 Sho-Bud D-10 Permanent • '54 Fender Dual-8 • Clinesmith T-8 • '38 Ric Bakelite • '92 Emmons D-10 Legrande II |
