| I am considering getting a square-neck dobro in the near future. My budget is $500 give or take. Any advice on models and what not would be greatly appreciated. |

| In that range, or close to it, there are two good options. One is the Gold Tone PBS and the other is the Wechter Scheerhorn. Watch the classifieds on the two main reso sites - http://www.reso-nation.org/ and http://resohangout.com - there is usually one for sale. You are not all that far off the price of a new one. I still have a Gold Tone that I keep in my office, and it really sounds quite good. I have friends who have the Wechter Scheerhorn and you would not be disappointed with one of those either. |

Bob has given you some good advice. Other imports in that price range are hit or miss on quality of build and set up.

If you can spring a few extra bucks, get a Gold Tone from Beard as they will be set up from the Beard factory. I would still go with the Gold Tone either way because you can send it or take it to Beard later and they'll do the set up for you. It is one of those guitars that is hard to put down, and once you have the Beard setup, even harder to put down. It doesn't have to take a back seat to most US made guitars in the tone department, and it has pretty good volume too. |

I could have a PBS on a desert island and never miss anything else. And I play a lot of Dobro.
I don't live on a desert island so I have other guitas. BUT if I had $500 to spend...no question at all, I' d buy a PBS.
I doubt that a RK is set up in America or that any one can make a real Dobro for less than $500. |

| I just brought my PBS out to an island where I have a second home and plan to keep it here (not quite a desert island though Jim). I can play it quite happily for hours, and it really does sound great. I love my higher-end axes, but this instrument sounds really good. I've been playing it all morning. |
