An Excel tuning wrench is simply a 2.5 mm allen wrench. It is used for both the nylon tuners and the allen cap screws for the splits. Since I wanted a tuning knob I made one from an allen wrench and a cork. It works well and feels good, and it's light and small.
Grind the short end of the allen wrench a bit smaller than the radius of the cork. Grind down the long end as desired.
Cut off all the cork up to the cap. Drill a hole in the cork. Cut a small channel in the top of the cork for the allen wrench to set in. Finally, embed it in Acraglas. Wait a day for it to dry and voila! Another fine red neck creation.

I like that the top of the wrench is "relic'd."
And Glen Morangee is an excellent single malt scotch, one of my favorites. _________________ My rig: Infinity and Telonics.

That's the truth! That was a brand new 65 cent allen wrench from Ace when I started, but I had a slip up when shortening it. Sure does look old. |

Probably was a brand new 65-dollar bottle of Scotch when you started also. Did that contribute to the slip up with the wrench? _________________ My rig: Infinity and Telonics.

An easier alternative would be a an old amp or guitar knob (the kind with a set screw), and a cut-off allen wrench. Stick the allen wrench in the knob and tighten the screw...done deal. |
