I met with Australia's #1 surf guitar star, Martin Cilia. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wl0RiemtynQ last Sunday at the "Dagger Bar" at Don the Beachcomber's in Huntingdon Beach for an evening of surf guitar music. See pics below (photo credits to Mandy Hall of Melbourne, Australia).
Surf music is a genre of popular music associated with surf culture, that actually originated in Orange County. It was particularly popular in the sixties, has subsequently been revived. The mostly instrumental surf rock genre, with a lead electric guitar (usually a Stratocaster) was pioneered by acts such as Dick Dale and the Del-Tones and The Ventures. Vocal surf pop, including both surf ballads and dance music, often had strong harmonies that are most associated with The Beach Boys. On the other side of the Atlantic, The Shadows in the UK created their own brand of instrumental sound that now has fanatics the world over. Surf guitar shares similar instrumental popularity with the steel guitar. In fact, the whammy bar on a Strat was invented to emulate the sound of a steel guitar. The lead is usually played with a good deal of reverb (sometimes higher than most lap steel guitarists would prefer) to create its unique sound
Martin http://www.martincilia.com has been championing the surf sound Down Under as lead guitarist for the great Aussie surf band, The Atlantics. Surf guitar is vying for a revival, much like the steel guitar and has its own brand of fanatics. Most of the crowd at the Dagger Bar were surf enthusiasts, including a film producer who was taking shots for a surf music revival/documentary scheduled for release later this year.
Surf and steel, as I have said before in this forum, make a good combination and I have produced a couple of CDs with this combination.
Here is the tune I played at The Dagger Bar, the only steel performance of the evening.
