I just got my P/V LA400 back from the repairer, after 3 month in his workshop, the problem was it distorted on both channels even at low volume,he says he has put in new caps and resistors ,but i when pluged my guitar in and the problem is still there it`s still distorting ,can anyone PLEASE maybe tell me what could be causing the distorsion,i have tried the speaker with another amp and thats fine.

Thanks for any help Jimmy.

Lets try troublshooting:

- run the line out (effects send) to another amp's line in...still distorting? yes= preamp problem, no = problem later.

- plug your guitar into another amp, run it's line out to your amp's line in...still distorting? Yes= power amp problem, no = preamp problem.

That should at least help narrow it down, unless the problem is the effects loop. Sometimes its something as simple as a dirty jack, so clean all those out with Caig or a good tuner cleaner and a plug...

It sounds like you are "overdriving" the amp. Too much signal into the first preamp will cause distortion that can't be eliminated by the amp controls. Here's what I recommend: Turn the amp all the way up. This forces you to use less volume pedal, and may eliminate the distortion you're hearing - if it's caused by hot pickups, or an amplified volume pedal.

You haven't mentioned what guitar and volume pedal you're using, so we don't have a lot to go on. Confused

Hi guys thanks for the input,Donny the amp is not being overdriven by hot p/ups or a volume pedal. because it distorts at very low volume on both channels, i use a Carter D10 the v/p is a Goodrich 120,I will try the line out from the P/V LA 400 to the input of my other P/V amp ect and hope this will narrow down the problem.

Thanks guys.

Jimmy.

Hi Ken,i tried what you said, still distorts both ways,so it looks like it may cost a lot of money to put right, more than the amps worth .So maybe i will forget it and just use the BW speaker with an amp top.

Thanks for your help..

Jimmy..

There are a couple of other things to check, but you'll have to take the amp out of the chassis. Make sure the amp is unplugged!!!

Look for all the clip on connectors, and make sure they are in good shape - gently take them off, spray some contact cleaner in them, clean the connector poles they mate with, and reconnect securely...

clean out all the control knobs - spray some Caig into the backs of the jack and work eack knob vigorously.

Make sure you do the same for the actual speaker out jack!!!

Look for any obvious debris or loose screws. Remove and tighten down loose bolts/screws/jacks. After all the above, plug in and test...then see if there is one specific knob that has an effect on the distortion more than any other. If so, that is the likely beginning of the culprit..

Hi Ken,thanks again for trying to help, the amp was with the engineer for three month so i assume he would have checked the conectors ect.

The amp is very old but i may give it another shot with the engineer, and tell him of your probable causes of the problem.

Thanks Jimmy.
