I've just been listening to Lyle Lovett's new album "Release me". There isn't many long steel breaks, (which makes this question harder) but they are just right and do have a great tone to em.
I don't know how to describe it but its a very tight sound. It sounds quite a lot like Gerry Hogan's steel sound with Albert Lee.
Anyone know how to get this sound? or what i mean? or is the album's steel player a member of the site? haha
If anyone has the album im talking about the sound of the steel on tracks 4, 8 & 13
I'm using an Excel U-12, but i always play through fender guitar amps.. so i'm thinking is it a solid state sound? is it something i could do with a graphic e.q. or compresor maybe?

I think you have your Chris Hillmans mixed up. I admit to doing a double-take each time I see this Chris here, but he is in England looks like he was born long after Manassas broke up!

If anyone uses the free music player "spotify", saying that i don't know if its available in the states? the album is on there. |

I think i've found my answer. I don’t know if anyone’s interested, but I’ll write this if just for closure of this thread.
I went out and bought the album on CD today and it confirmed what i'd pieced together from other posts I’d read on here this morning.
The steel player on the album is Buck Reid and he uses a JCH steel (which is the same as Gerry’s that I mentioned before)

To quote a bit "the gear is indeed a Profex ll and a Nashville 112. With Lyle's band, the "twin reverb" preset with minimal delay and reverb seems to work ok. The amp settings are low's -(11 o'clock), mid's -(off),
shift -(12 o'clock), high's and presence -(2 o'clock)"
So maybe i could emulate it with a boss e.q. pedal or something to try and tighten it up? I’m guessing the peavys selling point is its E.Q. futures…. But I’ve gotta save up to come out and see what everyone’s talking about America/Nashville for.
If Buck is out there I'd like to say i've really got a lot out of listening to your steel parts on the album and on live clips, I know you mention there isn't much room for steel in such a big band, but you make use off the space really well... Its usfull to know about how to deal with that... I play with a guy who occasionally uses an Orchestra + band. Steel can really over power and not cut through on them gigs.

My experience has shown me that 9 out of 10 players couldn't get close to that sound...even if they were sitting at Buck's guitar. 
What you're hearing is a good steel, played with minimal EFX, by a great player (with that last item being the most important). |

Mr. Buck Reid is in the top 5 in the world for me!
If you really want your mind blown buy his CD "A Work In Progress" and listen to "Sour Dough"!
I have worked on that tune for a few years and even with the tab for me it's not possible to play the emotion and the heart he has any way i try.
Buck plays like TW and PF in the respect of he nevers sounds like anybody else and the way he thinks when he is taking a lead!
Absolutly "Buck Reid" and one of my hero's and steel buddies!
Awesome playing Buck!
Now get to that morning practice!

Absilutely agree Kenny. Buck is a monster player, but a very nice guy with it. His CD is never out of my car's CD player. Yes, the Sour Dough track is just incredible and just makes me laugh out loud everytime I listen to the amazing runs throughout it. Just my natural reaction.
