Funny thing happened at work today, a gal brought her Ukulele in at lunch and was playing for us all for a bit, not bad.
She talked a bit about how she had been into Hawaiian music for some time.
I then mentioned that I also play a little Steel Guitar,
and she didn't know what that was, I tried to explain that steel is as much of a part of Hawaiian music as bread is to a sandwich, but she still couldn't understand, she said she would "look it up on the internet".

All you had to do was say, "SpongeBob." Laughing

I think good ole' SpongeBob is doing a lot to reintroduce the steel guitar to a whole new audience. My grandkids are always quick to tell me, "Granddad, you sound just like SpongeBob". I am impressed that as young as they are, they can actually recognize the sound of a steel guitar, and then visually relate it to the actual instrument. Some young SpongeBob fan today may be our next iconic steel player. You never know what inspires youngsters.

I was ask to talk to a middle school class about electric guitar and lap steel. When I brought out my Magnatone tuned up to c6th. I said. "I am going to play something, tell me where you have heard this before" I played "Song of the Islands"

When I finished 40 kids yelled SPONGEBOB!

When I was done talking and playing I let the kids play the guitars. Lots of the kids enjoyed the lap steel and dobro.
