I have a set of Scotty's E7th strings for 8 string, I want to restring my 6 string Rick for E 7 tuning, what guages should I use. The 8 string set runs
056
046
038
034
030
022p
018
015
I have also seen other guage suggestions for this tuning, anybody have some ideas?
Thank you |

I would leave off the two largest strings but that's just me (I don't usually like wide gaps between strings.) I use the Scotty's E7 set for E9th by raising the middle E (the 4th string) to F#, and I omit the two low strings when using E9th on a 6 string.

Great chart Crowbear. TX for posting
A couple other things to consider:
How much string length do you have behind the nut? (keyless)
Is your guitar a string through body design at the bridge?
Generally, the longer the string, the lighter it should be, pitch being the same.
I do have some rocker slide guitar players who always use a lighter gauge on a lap steel than we dyed in the wool horizontal players merely for the type of attack and tone they are looking for.
I notice string gauge has a bearing on sustain. Alot of tension usually equates to longer sustain.
A few years back I built a 6 string lap steel using a stop bridge. I'm considering making the same design in 8 but this time I'll do string through body to see how it changes the tone. |
