Do any of you travel with a lap steel?
I always take one with me on trips, I never know when I'll need it!
Once while traveling for business without a steel, I went into a music store, saw one and had to have it!
Of course I also had to buy a bar, picks, new strings and volume pedal! Then I called an old friend in that town to see if I could sit in with him playing music at church. It went very well and now I am hooked. I always have a travel steel.
I also have an inexpensive 6 string lap and battery amp in my van all the time. It also serves as a last resort backup steel when I gig.
My wife may think I am crazy, but while shes in some store shopping I'm in the car playin my steel...

Great idea and fantastic wife. I have a Rogue that was on special at MF and a Vox DA5 battery amp that work great to keep in the car while on vacation. My wife is a professional quilter and likes to stop at quilt stores while we are on the road. I like to stay in the car and play music. Usually my mandolin because it's small. I'll have to try the lap steel in the car the next time. My wife is so patient that one time when I needed to work on a tune she drove one of the legs for several hundred miles while I played mando the whole time.

I am selling my little keyless 6 string (sale pending to a Forum member)
So now I keep my keep one of my larger steels in my van. I will probably make another small one for airline travel. The only trouble is that once you get used to the extra strings (and cool chords) it's hard to adjust back to a six string...
