A buddy and I have been talking about each getting our resonators set up with the Fishman Nashville bridge pickup system.

I'm not considering doing the install of the pickup itself (after reading about some of the DIY installs that went bad). I would consider installing a new spider with the p/u pre-mounted and that's taken me to Kent Schoonover and his spider and somewhat different bridge system. He has promised proper string height and spacing for my Beard Goldtone.

My buddy is considering the beard spider with the more traditional slotted mount for the bridge and saddle.

I know the Fishman Nashville series p/u for resonator has been discussed here before and I'm decided on that system. I'm trying to get the pickup in without shipping off the guitar and with best tone both unamplified and amplified.

I know, I WANT IT ALL!

Brian: I had Kent put his spider with the Fishman Nashville in my R body Scheerhorn. He did the install and put a new cone in too. Sounds terrific acoustically and plugged in. Kent is a great guy to work with. I sent him the guitar and he did the complete installation and sent back all my original Scheerhorn parts so I can restore it to original if I want to.

Thanks Steven. I knew there had to be a few Schoonover spider/fishman pick up set ups out there. Glad to know yours is working well.

I'll probably end up doing the same but install his spider with the pickup premounted and calculated for height and string spacing myself.

Pro player Mike Witcher (on tour in Australia right now with the Peter Rowan Bluegrass Band) currently has this in his Clinesmith and last I heard he was very happy with it.

He didn't send his guitar to Kent, Kent sent the assembly to him, and when he was still living in Nashville before moving back out here to California I believe he had Tim Scheerhorn solder the connections.

Neither of them live there anymore since Tim has moved back to his home state of Michigan.

Forumite Paddy Long I think has the setup as well.

I had Kent set up one of my guitars with his modular spider and the Fishman Nashville Series pickup. For the most part I am happy with the plugged in sound, but I hate what the pickup did to the acoustic properties of that guitar (L body maple Scheerhorn). So much so, that I never play that guitar anymore unless I am plugging in.

Just to clarify - I am a big fan of Kent's modular spider system and the Fishman Nashville pickup. Kent's design works wonderfully with the Fishman pickup. Likewise, I am happy with the sound of the pickup. In most situations it sounds great and can be a real lifesaver. I just wish it didn't change the acoustic properties of my guitar! Of course, this is just my experience and YMMV.

I have been considering putting this set up in my L-body Scheerhorn also but Rob's comments are making me rethink that. Anyway I seem to use the R-body for plugging in situations and I don't know as I need it in both instruments. I really have no issue with the acoustic sound of the R-body as Rob does with his L-body and it sounds great to me. As Rob indicated YMMV.

Just an FYI my pickup had to be replaced as the element under the top string seemed to have died. Kent did the replacement for no charge and Fishman replaced the pickup at no charge. I have read of other problems like this on the Resonation site. The new pickup is working fine now.

I just recently installed the spider/pickup combo supplied by Kent. So far I am very pleased. Kent's work is top notch and he helped me out over the phone with any questions I had as I went. After having used the Fishman/JD system I would never go back to trying to mic up a reso onstage. It just works.
