So I went to practice with a band last night and they had offered to supply an amp for me to use. Historically I've not taken folks up on these offers but the only amp I had at the house was my Session 500. UGH. The amp they had for me was a 69 Fender Twin with factory JBL's. I was quite shocked at the tone of my Carter through this amp! It did lack the lower end that I get from a BW15... but man, the clarity and ringing tone on the high end was amazing. Not that I'll ever lug around a Fender Twin, but I was wondering how many steelers use a twin.

My first amp was a '71 Twin w/JBL's. Great amp.

My main gigging amp these days is a 71 Twin. Plenty of lows with 2 12's.
Here is a recording I did for a church a few months ago:

Quite a few, it is considered by many to be one of the all-time great tube amps for pedal steel guitar, particularly when loaded with a pair of JBL speakers.

I love my Twin - its in a head form which helps a lot with the weight. Nothing compares to the tone. I still use an Evan AH200 for most gigs, though, because its hard to resist a 5 lb amp.

I started on a Twin Reverb and regret sellling it. I asked Rlph Mooney how he got the "Bakersfield Sound". He said, "Get a Twin Reverb, turn all the knobs to 10 and control your output with your volume pedal". I tried it, and it worked, but it was really difficult to keep it under control. So I played for years, starting in 1983, with a Peavy Vegas 400 (one side for steel, the other for keyboards). Currently, the 400 sits in my music room, and I gig with a Peavy Classic 30, which sounds ok enough (lows are not as clear).- JACK

Used a 70 Twin for 20 years , Most of the time it had a 15" JBL in it rather than the 2x12's.

For the past year I am back to a 71 Twin with 2x12's...

Sure many will say it's too heavy, and it is heavy no doubt..but..it's a Twin reverb ! Weight is in the same category as a Nashville 400 , now I know many of us use those and don't say they are too heavy...

and yeh, you could push 2x15" with a Twin, , thats called a Dual Showman ! Two smaller 15" cabs would be perfect, daisy chain them for 4 ohms...

I have a 71 Twin with two 12 Weber Cal's and a 75 Vibrosonic with a 15 inch Jbl. They both sound good.

Mine is a clone, I played for a while with a single 12L. Recently built a baffle for an SRO 15, great sound!

Hey Storm; you are exactly close...ha.
Rick Johnson built me and Lloyd Green the Green tolex cabinets that are made out of Pine. The Chassis cab. is like a showman cab but taller; so you can put the reverb tank in it. And the speaker cabs are just big enough for 15" Speakers...>which I run two 8"ohm JBL K-130's(15" speaker) and Lloyd runs one JBL D-130(15" speaker).

Here's my Twin. It says fender in there somewhere... I like the first channel best for steel. It's clearer, and the midrange is nicer. The reverb is hooked up to it too.

Your kiddin' right, Tom? Razz Smile Ricky got me to try this setup--I have not looked back. Shobud + Fender Twin + K130 JBL's = tone heaven. Cool

Well, I'm close to tone heaven then. I just need a 2nd K130 and I'll have the same rig as you (more or less). Yes indeed, it sounds good. I was just wondering how the double speaker set-up works for you. A single speaker is one sound. The double speaker set-up has a different diffusion pattern, so I figure it sounds a bit different. But, I'm also thinking you have more headroom because you are simply moving more air. So my guess is two is better than one, even with 15" JBL's.

Ricky, that's a great looking rig!

Here's a pic of my three Twin Reverbs all in Rick Johnson head cabinets. Can't go wrong with a Twin! Top to bottom is a '71, January '66, and '74.

Please don't overlook, a Twin with 2x15's is a Dual Showman..of course one big cab...and with Reverb...

Now we have a Dual Showman reverb !

Victoria 80212 (80 watt tweed twin) and '66 TR. Both with D-120's.
Maybe not the best, but I've never heard anything better.
