I have a question about my Fender Blues Deluxe. I have the following settings: Presence: 3, Mid: 5, Bass: 7, Treble: 3, and the volume: 4 and get a great tone I do not use the drive channel just the clean channel. The question I have is after I have been playing for about 2 hours I have to start turning the treble and presence down and the mids and bass up to keep the same tone. After about 3 hours of playing I will have the treble and presence on zero and the mids on 7 and the bass on 9 is this normal for this amp or do you think there could be something wrong. I have never had a tube amp so I do not know much about them. If it is just something like replacing the tubes I can do that but if it is something else I would need to take it to a tech. I just need to know what I need to do or if anyone else has had this problem and what they did to fix it. Thanks, Landon.

I have a blues deluxe. It doesn't do that. However, that's freaky enough to sound like tubes to me.
If you live near someone with a tube tester I'd unplug all of them and take them to be tested first. |

Landon,
Not to be a wise guy, but are you sure it's not ear fatigue? (although I would imagine you would be turning the treble up and the bass down).
Has anyone you play with noticed this as well? |

| In my experience, tube amps seem to become more "alive" after around thirty minutes playing time. This could account for the tone changes that you are hearing. |

| If you then turn it off for a few minutes and turn it back on does it sound like it did when you first turned it on or when you turned it off later? |

If you give it time to cool back off it will.

Would you replace all of the tubes or just the preamp?

First thing would be to swap out both power tubes for a new, matched pair. Because they operate in push-pull a problem with only one would mean a loss of lows and some distortion. If this is not the problem it does not hurt at all to have a pair of spare power tubes on hand.
If still no joy I would swap out the preamp tubes one at a time, starting with the first preamp tube. If that does not fix it replace that tube and move on to the next.
If swapping tubes does not solve the problem I would take it to an amp tech who is familiar with this amp, there are a few resistors and capacitors in the circuit that might cause such a problem when they fail or degrade. Not having the schematic on hand I will not venture a further guess but this should not be an issue for a good tube-head technician. |
