Oh guys, I think I'm in trouble. I mean, I KNOW I'm in trouble, because I've got my next gig tomorrow and now my steel is broken.
I think I have two problems that have sort of compounded on me here. I've got a late 70s Sho-Bud Pro I. Truthfully, I got a great deal on it, but now I think I know why... it's not in the world's best shape, and I'm not sure what's up with the knee levers. Not sure if they're even original. For whatever reason I only had the LKL/LKR and RKL levers. This was already a little problematic because it'd be better to have a RKR too, I'd think. I can live without it though... but it would sure have come in handy tonight, because my LKR lever broke in a rehearsal tonight, and I don't think it can really be fixed. I've attached some photos. Doesn't look like something I could just solder back together...
Anyway. How do I go about fixing/replacing this? And while I'm at it, probably also getting the required parts to set up the RKR lever too, while I'm at it? How much am I likely going to end up spending?
AND OMG, WHAT ON EARTH DO I DO ABOUT ALL THESE UPCOMING GIGS?!?! Not sure I'd be comfortable taking someone else's borrowed steel out on the road. Time for a new guitar?

| It's the dreaded pot metal break. Classic on those Buds. Happens on all of them. I think James Moorhead on here has replacement non pot metal knee brackets. Those can be replaced very easily. Not a big problem. Look up James Moorhead here in the search and email him. I'm sure he will send them right out to you with instructions. Hey Jaaaaames! |

Agreed on talking to James about a replacement. It wouldn't surprise me if Michael Yahl had 'em, too, but I haven't looked.
As to your other question, what about the gig tomorrow?
You've not told us what that lever does. Were I in your shoes, I'd order via fastest shipping method and play tomorrow's gig using bar slants. If you came to pedal steel from lap steel or Dobro, you already know how.

Hey Michael - looks like that's exactly what I need. Thanks everyone - I was totally freaking out last night... I'll be ordering this bracket tout de suite.
Since it's my LKR (Emmons copedent), it's probably my second or third most useful lever, so I guess the next couple gigs without it will be weird, but I shouldn't have to resort to bar slants. Luckily I'm only on PSG 1/3 of the time and the rest of the night I'm rocking a different instrument.
Downside to being the utility guy: you've got a zillion friggin' instruments on stage with you, all of them just waiting to break. Upside to being the utility guy: if one instrument breaks, you've got a zillion minus one other instruments to pick up right there on stage! Hahaha... sigh.

| Are you able to put your rkl in the lkr spot as an interim measure? I did that once while waiting for a part (I think I had a broken lkl and I burglarized a lever from the back neck temporarily) - just a question of figuring out which lever you can best do without. |

I'm not sure I use LKR more than RKL. In fact, it's more than likely the opposite. The more I think about, the lever I lost is the one I use the least.
Just ordered the part and hopefully it shows up in time tomorrow for me to get it before I leave for my gig... which is in Iowa City (oof!).

| I'm not sure that would work but my is it creative. I don't think I'll be able to help myself... grabbing a set (I should probably have some anyway) on the way home from work, and I'm going to see what I can get away with tonight. It's a little trickier since it's the LKR and thus it reverses before it pulls. But I think I see how it could work out if I set it up just right. |

| I bought a new Sho Bud LDG 1000 in 1983 I played it a few years maybe 3 or so yrs one night spotlight shining on me as I took my ride... one of my Knee levers hit the floor,the next day I sold it back to the music store I got it from (lost about 5 or 600.00). I waited until the convention and ordered a franklin never had nary wrench on it EVER other than minor tuning. I hope WHO EVER thought of putting that Junk A$$ed Pot metal lever on Sho Buds has 1000 fleas infest his Arm pits!,I will NEVER Own another Sho Bud myself! EVER!,Embarrassed is not a good word for what I felt that night I still remember and that was almost 30 yrs! |
