One source says 1946

http://home.provide.net/~cfh/rick.html

but I think I have read here it was earlier.

Seems like a good thing in Bakelite to have reinforced neck - Yes?

I've seen my share of broken necks ... Winking ... I've yet to see a metal rod.

I think it's an urban legend ... Laughing

I agree with Rick. The broken neck on one of my post-war, '47-'48 vintage, had no rod in it. Just more suggestive BS I would guess. If there was a rod in the neck, and it was dropped etc enough to crack it, it likely wouldn't be repairable. Question

Below are the exact words in the link.
But I don't know what exactly "metal insert in neck" means. Question

1946 Model B specs:

Magnet 1 1/4" wide, chrome tailpiece,
phillips head pickup adjustment screws,
metal insert in neck,
T-shaped aluminum logo plate.

Well, I'm happy to take Rick's word for it, since he's seen the sad remains. Our man Richard Shatz ought to know too.

Not to argue but were the ones with broken necks that have no rods seen pre-1946? If so maybe the bracing is doing it's job?

The three I fixed were T- logos ... Circa '46 to '49 ...

I also worked on a Bronson B6 with 1.25" magnets ... No rod.

So with Bill Crellers ... That's 5 postwars ... No reinforcement.

Reminds me of all the "Spanish fly" stories I heard when I was a kid ... Laughing Embarassed Oh Well

I just went down to the basement ... To turn off my pepper seedling's lights.

I have 6 prewar Bakelite necks ... 3 postwar Bakelite necks ... And 4 Ace/Academy's.

None have been broken ...

I grabbed a Neodymium Iron Boron magnet strong enough to pull a nail out of the wall ...

Ran it up and down the necks ... Nuthin'.

Of course I didn't buy the rumors that ...Eddie Haskell ... Grew up to be John Holmes or Alice Cooper Laughing Laughing Laughing

Thanks Again Rick - I have generally thought the information on that website was useful but your findings makes me question the rest of the stuff that website says.

I wonder where he got the misinformation?

That's a site that's been up for years ... Folks have been quoting from it since the Forum began.

Lots of good information there ...

If you look at his biblio ... http://home.provide.net/~cfh/bib.html ... You'll see he took info from various books ... Including the Smith book we all have.

I wouldn't throw away this apple for one little bruise ... Winking

But the big question is ... Is Walt Disney ( whole body or just head) in cryogenic suspension in Cinderella's Castle ... Oh Well Muttering

I have to agree with Rick on this one. I have owned several of these B6 models over the years (including a couple of post war models with the neck broken) and have never known one to have a metal rod in the neck. I think that it might have been a good idea but I have yet to see one. Confused
